No same-sex marriage debate this year (Iowa)
Cedar Rapids Gazette ^ | Rod Boshart

The Senate's top Democrat said Monday he won't let the same-sex marriage issue be debated this session, a position the top GOP leader decried as obstructionist.

"I have no intention of taking it up," said Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, D-Council Bluffs. "I'm not going to put discrimination in the state Constitution. It's just a horrible idea."

Gronstal said the Iowa Supreme Court ruled last week that a state law defining marriage as only between one man and one woman violated equal protection guarantees for all people. To follow that with a resolution to amend the Constitution with a one-man, one-woman marriage amendment would be adding an "except" to that equal protection clause.

"I think that's unacceptable," said Gronstal, who added that he was "not inclined" to move the constitutional amendment legislation forward during the 2010 session either.

It is not discrimination if all people are allowed to get married. The definition of marriage for thousands of years has been one man and one woman, to perpetuate the human race.

Any other definition of marriage is a lie!

The reason they (the libs and Dems) don’t want to debate this issue is very simple ... they don’t want it to be on the ballot in 2010 or 2012. In 2004, 10 states (even liberal-leaning Oregon) had same-sex marriage proposals shot down. Some states went 75% to 25% against gay marriage if memory serves me. The ballot initiatives brought out more conservatives to vote, which meant more votes for Bush. They don’t want that to happen in the next two election cycles.

Evidently the “heartland” folks out in Iowa want it this way because they elected these people. This is not exactly “judicial tyranny,” any more than it was in Massachusetts. This is where America is in 2009.

Here in WI we were smart enough to enshrine it on our state Constitution. IA is screwed, it’s not eligible to go on the ballot until 2012.

Governor Gronstal is our local version of Harry Reid, although Gronstal has a more of a mafia thug quality about him.

This will never be “marriage” to God Almighty, and in Truth, only His opinion counts in the end.

Well, Iowans have proven they aren’t much concerned about God since they keep sending dungheap Harkin back to D.C each chance they get, and he’s as anti-life as a cino can get. ... ‘Will ya stand up?’

The people of Iowa need to remove anyone who is “not inclined.” Put in politicians who ARE inclined.

That will be the shot heard ‘round the world. While you guys are at it, do not confirm those justices who imposed this on you. Judges around the country will take note.

This SOB needs to be driven from office. He represents a county that voted Republican in the last election.

Actually, 62% oppose gay marriage in Iowa. I suspect the Democratic majority and the career of the governor will end because of this issue.

It's time for Iowans that oppose this to take the ACORN route and show up constantly as this creep's home. No justice, no peace...
