But doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose? If you end up paying more in penalties than you would otherwise, you're actually feeding the beast more.

My goal is to pay as little as possible. Minimize my tax exposure as much as possible legally and not pay any more (total) to Obombah than they can make me holding a gun to my head.

That said, I guess I'll concede a logical flaw in that I don't mind doing business on a barter basis. Craig's List as well as personal networking have helped greatly in minimizing taxable transactions. I traded the neighbor kid my son's old bicycle for some snow shoveling this winter. We both came out ahead on that one.
