WASHINGTON (AP) Hispanics made up nearly half of the more than 1 million people who became U.S. citizens last year, according to a Hispanic advocacy group. The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials said the number of Latinos who became Americans in fiscal year 2008 more than doubled over the previous year, to 461,317. That's nearly half of the record 1,046,539 new citizens overall in 2008, a 58 percent increase from 2007.

Lets see, the Bush administration made American citizenship all but pointless, and we’re now wondering why Hispanics are outnumbering Caucasian Americans?
Are they joking?

Might not the Latinos who actually went thru the naturalization process be a little more undertanding of the GOP philosophy? What evidence is there of this? Any at all?
The simple fact is that the hispanics that are coming here now have the same sense of entitlement that the dems have been cultivating for years.

We must win their votes, not deride their accomplishments. How? Bush tried amnesty and could only get 42%. McCain practically guaranteed amnesty and got less.
How do we "win" their vote?

Think Miami, and Cuban immigrants there ... vast majority vote Republican.
We are talking about Latinos who have gone thru the INS hoops to become citizens .. it is a very lengthy and expensive process. Most who go through that procedure have little patience for those who sneak in and show little respect for actual citizenship.

There's nothing wrong with this. They came here using legal means and deserve their citizenship. If anything we need legal immigrants.

I don't remember southern Europe being contiguous with America, or having a large percentage of its population holding revanchist views on territory lost 150 years proir. I don't recall Italian, Spanish, Greek etc politicians speaking of dual nationality or influencing America through demographics. And I seem to recall that Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Italian are different languages and that said populations shared little in common. I also don't remember Cultual Marxism and grievance politics dominating American culture back then. Finally, I seem to remember America's native population still growing and thereby assimilating said immigrants.
I am a child of immigrants who sees himself first and foremost as an American. I am one heck of an exception.

Think Miami, and Cuban immigrants there ... vast majority vote Republican.Big deal. What is that? About 1/10 of one percent?
What should we "give" the other 99.9% to win their vote.

These are not amnesty candidates. These immigrants did it the right way. I have no disdain whatsoever for immigrants that followed the rules. They earned their vote.
>> How do we “win” their vote?
The same way we win everyone else’s vote. Conservatism sells.

In ten years Texas will be a Democratic state as will Florida.

If you go to Staten Island, you'll find plenty of people speaking a hundred year-old dialect of Italian because they haven't fully assimilated yet and if you go back and read the concerns from those periods, the Americans of the day were every bit as worried about being overrun by Catholics with huge families and alien cultures. And while it's currently downplayed, do not forget that Catholicism was seen as quite insidious and expansionist because one can't get married Catholic unless the spouse converts and they agree to raise the children Catholic. As late as 1960, people wondered if a Catholic could get electedd President. Go back and read the editorials and articles published a century ago about the evil papists and cartoons depicting bishops hats as alligator maws ready to swallow people up. It's largely been forgotten because those people assimilated, are now generally considered just as "white" as Northern European Americans, and Catholicism is no longer the alien bogeyman it once was.

I don't forget at all. I'm a New Yorker. I know well things like the draft riots and ethnic politics in NYC. You are right about many groups not assimilating. And it has hurt America. The great wave immigrants helped bring socialism to America and eventually over-ran the ethnic core of this country. From poverty and grievence politics they elected Democrats for a century. 2008 was the first time a majority of white Catholics voted for a Republican presidential candidate. The GOP has been the party of middle America and it has taken a century for assimilation to occur, even with the reduction in immigration from 1922-1966.
The truth is that most Hispanics will be Democrats for decades even if we have a cut off of immigration. Yours is not an arguement against illegal and legal immigration. It is an arguyement for vastly reducing legal immigration.

Are you purposely refusing to acknowledge the difference between those who come here legally and go thru the lengthy and costly process to become citizens v. those who steal across the border?
I would venture a guess that 99% of those who undertake the citizenship path are not here for goodies, but to work, contribute to society and the American economy, and achieve the “American Dream” or what will be left of it. Frankly, I would trade a dozen native born liberals for every one of those legal immigrants who have taken the citizenship path.
You would do well to go to a naturalization ceremony and see the people who’ve pursued that route. You might come away with a very different perspective.

You let your kumbaya good intentions cloud empirical evidence sitting on yer face.
We argued all this before you got here over the illegal invasion....and to a degree legal immigration quotas since 1965 which favor those who vote Dem.
The notion among some here then was like your’s ...the more Mexicans the better....we can change them or they're Catholic right?
last November Obama won precisely due to the brown vote which along with a monolithic black vote can ensure socialism forever baring a cataclysmic event.
55% of whites voted for MacPalin, normally enough to thwart minority voting habits.
Not this time though precisely due to the Mexican population spike here.
I hope you're happy with all of it though. We tried to warn you.
The only way to stop this is to limit third world immigration which aside from Vietnamese and white Cubans and some rich South Americans is decidedly leftist voting....and get more peckerwoods out to vote with a better top of the ticket candidate.
I'm sure you disagree but try to disprove my assertions with facts and stats not emotive reasoning.
Thanks

Again, I ask, where is there any evidence that hispanics are conservative. Leave out the Cubans. We've already established that.
