WASHINGTON (CNN) Virginia Democrats are hoping Sarah Palin remains so polarizing that she'll keep voters from from supporting the GOP in this fall's much-anticipated gubernatorial election.
In a new Web video released Tuesday, the Democratic Party of Virginia replays audio from a Palin fundraiser last fall, in which she described "these small towns that we get to visit" as "real America."
The Web video attempts to draw a link between that comment and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's recent claim that that northern Virginians "aren't necessarily thinking in the same way that folks like you and me think." Huckabee made those remarks while campaigning in Appalachia on behalf of the Republican gubernatorial candidate, Bob McDonnell.
The video also calls attention to a former John McCain adviser, Nancy Pfotenhauer, who said on a cable show last fall that Democratic-leaning northern Virginia is not the "real Virginia."

Oooh, that might just have the opposite result. LOL.
Sarah will energize the conservative base. The Dems are whistling past the graveyard on this one.
Well, coming from southwestern Virginia myself, I can tell the Rats that they are barking up the wrong tree with this line of attack, since Palin hunts and is pro-2nd Amednment, is an Evangelical Christian, has five kids, has actually worked for a living, and is one tough woman, all traits to be admired in the Scots-Irish culture that is rural Virginia.
As a resident of northern Virginia (Fairfax County) all I can say to “Democratic-leaning northern Virginia is not the ‘real Virginia’” is that the statement is 100% correct.
In the 30 years I’ve lived here, Northern Virginia has gotten increasingly Democrat / Leftist and the taxes show it. Now that we have a drop in real estate assessments, the Democrat-controlled Country Government’s answer is to increase the tax rate. Government, unlike the county residents, can’t get by with less. It’s for the children, don’t you know.
Virginia is a conservative state with several islands of leftist behavior and unfortunately I live in one.
Jack
Are they getting political advice from the "Acme Co."?
The Dems will carry the areas they usually carry ...poorer urban areas and close-in to DC. We got a wake-up call last November - I was shocked when Chesapeake (where I live) went for 0. Now we need to keep the energy up through this November and into next November.
I’ve always wondered this about VA: Is it mostly “rural” population, or does the tail of the DC metro area wag the dog like New York state?
She’s right - the lib weenies in N. Virgina happily consider themselves part of DC, except that they can’t stand the crime and they are too great of snobs to send their kids to DC schools.
A homage to small towns is an insult???
Liberals are always looking through the upside down carnival mirror.
Democrats are disgusting filth. Perhaps we should have a video of Obama accusing our troops of air raiding villages and killing civilians, now he is in Iraq trying to be buddy buddy with the same troops he accused of being murderers
I was born and raised in NoVA....it’s basically another state at this point (although that wasn’t the case when I was a kid). There are a number of rural areas in the rest of VA, but a lot of it is rather “built-up” while remaining very conservative (Roanoke, the 2nd largest city is very conservative, for example), as are areas around Richmond.
Gov. Palin’s rally at the Richmond International Raceway in October drew 32,000 people per Richmond TV and the Secret Service. She’ll help McDonnell immensely if she campaigns for him here and the Dims know it.
“Palin hunts and is pro-2nd Amednment, is an Evangelical Christian, has five kids, has actually worked for a living, and is one tough woman, all traits to be admired in the Scots-Irish culture that is rural Virginia”
Unfortunately, we live in a MEDIA-CENTRIC SOCIETY now, and we just came through a National Election in which the War Hero and experienced politician, who has spent his entire life, and his blood, in service of his country, and his conservative female VP were succsessfully painted as a moron and a boob.
And the inexperienced, coke-selling, radical Socialist of questionable background, who never has held a real job of ANY kind in his entire life, with a VP who is a walking gaffe machine of corruption, were sold as THE LIVING MESSIAHS, the cure for all of America’s ills.....
As much as I like Sarah, the Dems have successfully managed to frame public perception of her.
“A homage to small towns is an insult??? Liberals are always looking through the upside down carnival mirror.”
Are they???
There was an article on KOS on Sunday by of thier “Opinion Crafter’s” (That means Washington LOBBYIST in KOS-speak), about how people would have to be FORCED back in to the cities to create the population densities high enough for the “Green” application of “Public Services”.
While the Dem voters see us as boobs and hicks, the radical Socialists now in charge see us as a THREAT to what they want to do.
Democrats should be rounded up and confined within the communities they’ve ruined. I say that once you vote Democrat in a municipal election, you ought to be forced to live there for the next 30 years.
You are correct, McGruff. Four of her 6 appearances in the state had to be moved to larger venues, including an appearance in heavily Democratic Fairfax County where 23,000 showed up to hear her on a Tuesday morning.
I forgot to mention above that the majority of voters in NoVA are more attuned to national politics as they are rarely “natives” and have moved to the area to either work for the federal government or government contractors. Voter turnout in NoVA for state and local elections is some of the lowest in the state, and the guberatorial election is in this “off” year of 2009.
Yep...thanks to the VA. GOP getting rid of ultra conservative Jeff Frederick the Old Dominion is likely a sure things for Republicans again. I just hope we have no more snake-handling, Bible-thumping, Latinos-in-American-sheepclothing CINOS like Frederick around when Palin comes calling.
CNN Political Ticker is right, CNN’s numbers are tanking, and their totally left wing reporting is like a ticking timebomb that will sink them.
Just a few weeks ago the VA GOP was sending out a fundraising letter featuring Gov. Palin’s warning about socialism, and other ills to come from electing 0bama. My bet is is that they got more donations that way.
