Magazines Fuss Over First Lady, but Newsstand Sales Are Mixed
NEW YORK -- Vogue's March cover story on Michelle Obama called her "The First Lady the World's Been Waiting For." No doubt she's been embraced by the media world, appearing on cover after cover, from Us Weekly to Newsweek. But when it comes to sales, Ms. Obama may not yet be general-interest magazines' new Princess Diana, who regularly helped the industry sell more copies at newsstands.
A Michelle Obama cover doesn't hurt a general-interest magazine, the numbers suggest, but it doesn't produce more than an occasional lift either.
New York magazine's March 23 issue, with a cover story about "The Power of Michelle Obama," looks like it produced "average" sales, New York said April 3, although the numbers remain subject to change.
When Ms. Obama appears on the cover of a magazine directed toward African-Americans, however, or when she appears with the president, sales really do seem to jump.
Ms. Obama proved newsstand gold for Ebony last fall. The September 2008 issue, with a cover story on "The Real Michelle Obama," sold a hefty 261,000 copies on newsstands, 26% better than the six-month average, according to its report to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

I noticed that, they have free copies locally at the library. I saw the library person dumping them in the trash. Obama cover issues as well. Fitting.
Why is this? She's just a typical American lawyer.f
The magazines are selling because of Obama fatigue. People are starting to get tired of looking at their smug faces on t.v., in the living sections of newspapers and on magazine covers. People need a break.
The bloom is off the rose. 10% unemployment will do that for you.
We’re all racists now.
We need to apologize and send her a check for reparations.

Look, I usually avoid negative comments about looks and appearance, but Michelle needs an orthodontist, don’t you think?
Also, she does not appear to be comfortable when she smiles, like maybe she is not used to that expression?
...when I’m in the supermarket checkout line it seems like Jenifer Annison is always on some cover or another.....why do people seem to care about her so much?....she’s no Meril Streep in the acting dept.
Unfortunately though, when they all go belly up, they'll get bailed out.
She could give 'Bat Boy' a run for its money in the Weekly World News.
Makes a nice door mat, or bird cage lining.
“Ms. Obama proved newsstand gold for EBONY last fall”
She’d better.. I mean.. it’s Ebony!
The MSM worked so hard to make Sarah Palin look bad, and that did not work. Now all the work on Michelle to make her look good is of no effect either. Interesting.
is Denver still looking for a QB ?
There’s another one to turn over while waiting @ the checkout. ;-)
The truth is, you could take all the unsold end cap magazines with Michelle on the cover (including all the unsold Inauguration centerfolds the MSM published), place them in a furnace, and heat three states next winter.
It seems like the Drive By Media is trying to convince us (and themselves) that Michelle Obama is this attractive, nice, intelligent woman.
Sorry, that is like giving my money to Bernie Madoff.
This was the most honest cover of last year. It struck pay dirt, which was why they squealed like stuck pigs.
Princess Diana was beautiful. No comparison here.
I agree. I have no issues with the FLOTUS. But I am tired of seeing them every where I turn.
Having traveled in China a few times, images of Mao are every where too.
