Obama believes in his own exceptionalism
DCExaminer.com ^ | April 6, 2009 | Chris Stirewalt

When a foreign journalist asks the president of the United States a chuffy question about American exceptionalism, one would expect either a quick, sharply worded dodge or a long, diplomatic evasion. What no president before the current one would have attempted was to take up the issue like a professor leading a seminar on foreign affairs. But that’s just what Obama did at a NATO news conference.

Commenting on American exceptionalism is like trying to tell a friend about a complex movie or a great meal. You’re bound to get something wrong, and you’ll certainly leave out important parts.

Presidents lean heavily on the idea that America is endowed with special rights and responsibilities as the most important, most virtuous nation in the world. The concept is also more useful as a mythic, broad idea, than something that can be quickly parsed. So covering the issue in impromptu remarks at a joint news conference on foreign soil would seem rather perilous.

Talking about America’s special status could make it shrink or disappear.

Bill Clinton famously called the United States “the indispensable nation” and George W. Bush defended pre-emptive war with Iraq on the grounds of America’s exceptional status, but the subject has been for major addresses, not gabbing with the Euro media.

But Obama waded in, because that is his nature.

“I believe in American exceptionalism,” Obama said. “Just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”

This title really does say it all. This whiny, pompous bastard is truly a national disgrace.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have just witnessed the Peter Principle in action.

An inflated resume leads to an inflated brain and Zero has just proved it.

Oh, my. Well, I guess those religious Turks are offended by Obama's pretended apostasy.

That must be what it is. I can't see how he would have given them offense otherwise, can you?

I was in Turkey on business a few months ago. Obama wants to recognize Armenian genocide. This is a huge issue for a lot of Turks. They're pretty sensitive about it (this is a country where it's against the law to criticize Kemal Ataturk, who overthrew the Ottomans and brought about the modern Turkish state).

One Turk told me that her children said Obama was a bad man because he was going to accuse the Turks of being murderers (i.e., committing genocide 100 years ago).

Obama used the Armenian genocide as a way to gain votes and money from Armenian Americans during the campaign. It may have been smart domestic campaign politics, but it is stupid diplomatically.

Turkey is a regional power in a strategically important geographic location and an ally. Why go out of your way to insult them? Actually, to the Turks it's far more than an insult.

And yeah, defol essentially means, "Go to Hades."

Name one other country that has the contitutionally guarenteed god-given rights of the United States.

Name one other country that has accomplished as much as the United States has in just 200+ years.

Name the countries that have tried socialism, in its various forms, that have gone bust in less than 50 years.

Yes, America is exceptional, and it pi$$es off the demonrats.

I get it.

We're all special in our own way.

So when the kids play baseball, we shouldn't keep score, because then they'll all feel special because they "won".

Whose genius idea was that anyway? I don't know their name but I can tell you with 100% certainty that they're an idiotic freaking lib.

Oh, how you flatter him ... we both know those are polite words. What I’d like to say about him would ban me.

Well, he has a funny way of showing his sensitivity -- another thread points out that Obama skipped a trip to Normandy's beaches, ostensibly to spare the feelings of .... the Germans.

With regard to the Armenian genocide, he's on factually solid ground. I wish U.S. politicians wouldn't wave Old World bloody shirts to get hyphenated-American votes, but they won't stop, will they?

But the Turks can't blink what their recent ancestors did (under the pashas and the Young Turks, by the way, not the Ataturk, if my recollection is correct), any more than the United States can overlook its history of human bondage and the conquest of the Indians.

I don't think it's in our interest to antagonize an ally, but on the other hand ..... they did it, cold dead fact.
