Taliban takes credit for N.Y. massacre

Published: April 4, 2009 at 7:08 PM

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, April 4 (UPI) -- A Taliban leader in Pakistan claimed Saturday the mass shooting at an immigration center in New York was carried out by his group.

Analysts called Baitullah Mehsood's claim "far-fetched," Press Trust of India reported. Police in Binghamton, N.Y., say a Vietnamese immigrant who had taken English classes at the center, fatally shot 13 people before taking his own life.

But Mehsood told reporters in Pakistan that a Pakistani and another man were responsible for the massacre, PTI reported. He said his group had already promised to carry out terrorist attacks in the United States if U.S. drone attacks on the Taliban in Pakistan continue.

Mehsood also claimed a suicide attack on a convoy in North Waziristan that took the lives of 17 people, including five children. He said that attack was specifically in retaliation for a drone attack Saturday that killed 13 people.

Is this Muslim guy just a crazy - attention seeker or is he damn serious and there's a cover-up like (possibly) in the TWA case?

Could be that there is a plan, and he has mistaken the Binghamton incident as the planned attack.

Perhaps there will be another in the NY area, and this guy Mehsood has just tipped us off.

Just thinkin’ out loud here.

“He’s just crazy, but lets kill him anyway!”

I’m sorry, I forgot we no longer have a government that cares about someone who threatens Americans with death.

looks like we are back to using the clinton playbook on dealing with terrorists.

which was... deny any link to terrorism, thereby denying the terrorist any ‘victory’ or terror quotient.

this only works until the terrorists start doing secondary attacks on responders while the media is watching (just like 9-11).

of course, to deal with that you must demand very little live coverage of any events. watch for more attacks like this reported well after the fact and no live reports or interviews from people at the scene (except for ‘officials’ of course)

The purpose of a terrorist is to sow terror. There's no downside in claiming credit for Mehsud - it inspires his own followers and gets ordinary Americans worried that maybe the Taliban had something to do with it.

Baitullah Mehsud isn't any old crackpot - he's been the rising young star of Islamic terrorism for a while, he was behind the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the Pakistani government has effectively surrendered large portions of the country to him. In the worst case, Pakistan and it's nuclear weapons might just end up in his hands.
