VIDEO: Newt: I would've disabled missile
Politico.com ^ | 4/5/9 | Mike Allen

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told “Fox News Sunday” that he would have disabled the long-range missile before North Korea launched it, saying too many people “do not appreciate the scale of the threat that is evolving on the planet.”

“One morning, just like 9/11, there’s going to be a disaster,” Gingrich said. “I have yet to see the United Nations do anything effective with either Iran or North Korea.”

Reacting to President Barack Obama’s speech in Prague, Gingrich called the plan for a Global Summit on Nuclear Security a “wonderful fantasy idea,” saying Russia and other nations can’t be trusted.

“What are they going to promise, and why would we believe them?” Gingrich said. “It’s very dangerous to have a fantasy foreign policy, and it can get you in enormous trouble.”

Host Chris Wallace asked Gingrich: “So you’re saying that President Gingrich would have taken out that” missile?

Gingrich replied: “There are three or four techniques that could have been used, from unconventional forces to standoff capabilities, to say: ‘We’re not going to tolerate a North Korean missile launch, period.’ I mean, the world’s either got to decide that North Korea is utterly dangerous … I’d recommend, look at electromagnetic pulse, which changes every … equation about how risky these weapons are.”

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, appearing with Gingrich, said: “In the countryside of South Carolina, at some point, you’ve got to back up words with action. … There have been a long series of … intentional steps on North Korea’s part, and little in the way of actions from the standpoint of either America or the international community.”

Bill Clinton did NOT get to what he claims was a “balanced budget” due to spending cuts.
Instead, the Republican Congress, led by Newt Gingrich, got Clinton to sign off on Capital Gains Tax Cuts, which INCREASED IRS revenues dramatically.
Clinton was also forced into signing “Welfare Reform” which helped reduce spending and put people back to work, which helped “balance” the budget.

The truth is that George W. Bush DID reduce what is called “discretionary” spending.

The problem Bush had was that he did create the Part D RX entitlement. However, in hindsight? Hey, there is NO reason for this Congress to TOUCH health care for the over 65 or Medicare crowd, not much anyway. W might have given us a firewall which will be be grateful for, down the road.

Also, W had to deal with 8-11, Iraq and Afghanistan and several natural disasters, which all cost money.

I wish W had vetoed a few budget bills, but I think you need to get off his back, a bit.

Obama is the biggest spender in US history. Lets concentrate our fire on HIM, ok?

Excellent point.

American needs to be the shinning beacon on the hill leading as opposed to the current “leadership” bent on being in the pack.

Does this new world order mean that 120 other countries will provide private property rights to their citizens or that we have to give up ours?

Newt’s Conservatism is to Conserve Newt’s Political aspirations.

Absolutely!

What's sad about this is back in the 90's I had high hopes for Gingrich. Now he turns my stomach.

how Newt Gingrich and Trent Lott set the stage for the Republicans to lose both houses of Congress

A large number of idiot children here seem to forget that without Newt there would have been no Congress to lose. BTW what have any of you done for the cause lately? Or Tom Coburn for that matter. What has he accomplished besides nothing?

Slick Willy was not a fiscal conservative.. The only reason why he was one was due to the fact he had no votes to pass his real programs.. Remember he fought against the balance budget...

Get over it.

In a war, if you were in battle, and were charging up a hill, would you be totally preoccupied and obsessed with commanders who died, or were removed from the field, 3 months ago?

In sports, when planning for a big game, would you be talking to the team about how bad it sucked that your star player got injured, 3 months ago, and was out for the season, or forever?

Nobody is perfect.

However, it is time to think about the future and you seem stuck on the past.

Agreed!
In fact, Clinton “shut down the government” and got the MSM to claim that Newt had “shut down the government” when Clinton and the GOP fought over the budgets.

So, Gingrich is responsible for the Repubs winning Congress? I think they would have won with or without him. People were just plain fed up.

Here's what I do for "the cause":

Work

Pay taxes

Be informed

Spread the truth

Vote in EVERY election

Raise my kids to be responsible for their actions

Support financially and physically CONSERVATIVE candidates

Pray for my country

Coburn is a man of HONOR...a concept Gingrich will never understand.

So you are one of those that think we should forget history, and instead make the same errors over and over again and hope for a different result. What do they call that anyway??

Newt was great but by the time he started doing commercials with Al Sharpton I’d had enough.

The Founding Fathers and Reagan come pretty close to perfection, don't you think?

I do think about the future but those who forget the past are destined to repeat It.

I wish Gingrich would just go away...they I COULD forget him.

That's funny, but it got me to speculating: What did become of the SDI work that President Reagan started about twenty-five years ago? I can't see any reasons why either of the Presidents Bush would not have continued to fund it, and even Bill Clinton would have appreciated having a tool to deal with what he might have considered an unlikely event.

Is it possible that with black-budget financing, we've spent the last quarter of a century developing a weapon we've not had to use yet, and we've got enough reasons to still keep as a secret? The Dear Leader might not be enough motivation for us to pull that sword out of its scabbard.
