The SWOSU Student Government Association will host an open forum to discuss and debate the idea of having a tobacco-free campus this Wednesday, February 25, at 7 p.m. in Room 104 of the Stafford Center on the Weatherford campus.
Everyone is invited to voice their opinion.
Additional information is available by contacting SWOSU Student Body President Greg Franklin at sga@swosu.edu or by phone at (405) 408-****.
The vote is to take place in the next couple of days, though, there isn't anything about it on the website now.
I haven't been able to find the original story that told about the vote.
Please, freedom loving conservatives, let your voices be heard as the universities trample on people's rights in the name of allegedly faulty/fraudulent science and the children.
They are worried that seeing tobacco users on campus will be a bad influence on the children and that's not the image they wish to project. They prefer to project the image of control and repression instead of freedom and learning, IMO.
Even though it's most likely in vain, please pray for Oklahoma to get off the politically correct, freedom denying path.
Don’t these people have anything better to do? Next they’ll regulate which side of the street you can walk on, or what, if any, kind of beer you can drink, or you can’t have leather covered seats in your car. Go to school and learn.....forget the petty stuff until you are in a position to control things.
They ban one fag (aka cigarettes) while promoting another (sodomites). These institutions of depravity don’t care one whit about “bad influences.”
If it’s smoke free, where are they going to smoke pot?
I think there’d be more sympathy for smokers if A) They didn’t blow smoke where other people could smell it and B) They didn’t litter so much.
By far, the most common piece of litter I see are cigarette butts. Do people have the “right” throw their butts down wherever they see fit?

Most of the colleges in my area are like this. Can’t smoke even in the parking lot. Glad that I’m out of the tobacco game. The overweight are next, and then it’s back to drinkers.
Ping
I don’t blow smoke at other people. Non smokers can easily avoid smoking areas but they don’t because they like to cause trouble for others.
If everyone was smart, they’d throw the butts around the trees and plants. Cigarette butts make excellent pesticides and it would be enviromentally sound. ;P
Our children need to be taught what freedom is and how to shrug off the Soviet style repression.

Just wait until mthey come for whatever pleasure it is you enjoy, like beer, or coffee, peanut butter, sugar, etc. The destruction of liberties will not stop with smoking, trust me. They are just using it as a model of incrementalism.

Time will tell, I suppose.
The biggest shock came when I found out how many conservatives are on campus. Unfortunately, some of them don't like the smell of smoke. If smells could kill, we'd all be dead.
Please continue to give what input you can to this thread and ping others.
If nothing else, maybe they (busy bodies) will think twice about going after other things. /sarc
I already have a way to keep "smoking" without tobacco and there isn't anything they can do about it as the bill is written. I'm not talking about pot either. LOL
Please God help me get out of there before the ban takes effect or else help me find some good online courses from other schools that allow smoking. I have principles and would rather my money go to schools that allow smoking or that are totally online.
I will never vote for Burns Hargis(R) again after he turned Oklahoma State into a tobacco free campus nor will I willingly and/or knowingly let my money get to OSU because of the ban.
Tell me, does the University have the power to tax?
Not that I know of, so I’d say no.
Shall Southwestern Oklahoma State University implement a campus-wide tobacco-free policy?
Such a policy would be applied to all faculty, staff, students, contractors, campus residents, and visitors. This policy applies to all university property, facilities, and vehicles, owned or leased, regardless of location. Further, smoking is also prohibited in private vehicles parked on university property, regardless of location. Following the implementation of such policy, all ash trays would be removed from campus, and the university policy for tobacco use would be re-written in accordance with this new policy. This policy will not be implemented sooner than the first day of class, spring 2010, and no later than post graduation 2012.
Enforcement of this policy is dependent upon all members of the university community complying with the policy and by reminding and encouraging others to comply as well. Campus Security is authorized to provide information and warnings to smokers. Repeat offenders will be reported through the appropriate administrative structure and be subject to progressive disciplinary action in accordance with established university policies and practices. Violations by faculty shall be reported to the respective Dean of the office of Academic Affairs. Violations by staff shall be reported to the office of Human Resources. Violations by students shall be reported to the Dean of Students and handled in accordance with existing policy. Guests and visitors to the campus will be provided with information about the policy and requested to comply accordingly.
Notice how it changes from tobacco to smokers? Wonder if they'll try to discriminate against smokers and let the other tobacco users use tobacco in their automobiles?
Please use your ping list, Gabz. I would really appreciate it.
Ping! Only I don’t have a ping list so this is the second of the probable 3 pings you’ll probably get from me in our lifetimes. :)
