Anti-Obama talk worries some on right By: Michael Calderone April 4, 2009 06:45 AM EST

While Washington policy makers coped with 21st century political problems this week, some conservative talkers were dredging up 20th-century "-isms."

Glenn Beck, who graced the cover of The New York Times on Monday, teased Friday’s episode of his increasingly popular new Fox News show with images of Stalin, Lenin and Hitler, while telling audiences on Wednesday’s show that he was wrong to have said the Obama administration is leading America to socialism — it’s actually fascism.

“They’re marching us towards 1984,” Beck said. "Big Brother, he’s watching.”

Although Beck’s brand of libertarian conservatism has generated a strong following, some members of the right-leaning commentariat openly doubt whether such heated rhetoric is helpful to the Republican Party or the conservative movement at large.

Conservative author David Horowitz, himself no stranger to controversy or heated accusations, warns that the criticism of Obama among some conservatives has approached “over-the-top hysteria." It’s not just Stalin comparisons, Horowitz wrote this past week on FrontPageMag.com — one contributor likened the president to David Koresh, Charles Manson and Saddam Hussein.

Borrowing from conservative writer Charles Krauthammer — who in 2003 coined the term “Bush derangement syndrome” to describe some Bush haters — Horowitz dubbed the piece, “Obama Derangement Syndrome.”

“Conservatives, please,” Horowtiz said. “Let's not duplicate the manias of the left as we figure out how to deal with Mr. Obama. He is not exactly the anti-Christ, although a disturbing number of people on the right are convinced he is.”

I just love how Horowitz, who has spent many years now, doing his best to whip people into a frenzy now wants everybody to be all nice to Bambi. I am learning to trust very little people. Seems like everybody is in it for themselves.

Good point! Bears repeating...

I will laugh at every stumble he makes, applaud his mistakes and cheer his enemies. These rotten bastards poisoned the well for the last eight years, and I want them to choke on it now. *No* bipartisanship, *no *compromise, *no* surrender *

Create doubt. Question his judgment. Support his opponents. Ridicule his errors. Mitigate his successes with suggestion of unintended consequences. Refuse to praise his work. Challenge his advocates when they advocate; don’t let them own the conversation.

Great post, roses of sharon!

Had Repubs not feared to identify Obama 'early on'; then perhaps we would not be discussing 'what' to call him now. As for quibling as to 'which' ism is most suitable; think Obama 'swings both ways'; so, one way or another; there IS truth.

So this pantload Michael Calderone cherry picks comments from ONE conservative (Horowitz) and ONE squishy Republican operative (Frum) and writes a column about how “some” on the right have their panties in a twist over criticism of that scumbag, Dumbo? Pathetic.

But that’s the Politico for you....

Not only are they trustworthy, they are really good at getting rid of flies.

Actually, that's been the MO of the Drive-By Media for many, many years. Back before there was an internet that allows US to be the watchdogs.

RE “ If yOu don’t like it... go join the Ron PAULISTINIANS.. you almost sound like a match.

LOL. You mean those crazy freedom loving, constitution loving stable currency, free market capitalists? noOOOOOo. Dont even suggest it. I want to be part of the “big government socialist, bank and auto bailout and national debt loving, we stand for nothing but our own political power, but THOSE guys are Marxists and Communists; Republican party”!

I like the PS quote "The same people who told us that we need TARP to save the country (and give AIG billions $$$ to send to foriegn banks in secret)told us there were WMDs in Iraq"

I don’t like hearing that about Horowitz. I thought he was smarter than that. I had a lot of respect for him since he had truly experienced the “other side”. I figured he should know what he’s talking about. He needs to see the wrongs with obama and his administration and shout it from the rooftops!
(Even moderate liberals who thought GWB put us in an economic frying pan should see that obama is throwing us right into the fire.)
Do not eat your own, David Horowitz!

Charles Blow had a similar piece in which he opined that lunatic right-wingers might actually become violent due to the rhetoric of Beck and others.

Politico pretends it is a middle-of-the-road, independent observer.

It isn’t.

“You never get very far in American politics with extreme talk,” Frum said.”

Seems that such talk was good enough to get 0bama in the Whitehouse

Horowitz dubbed the piece, “Obama Derangement Syndrome.”

David you can't have it both ways. Obama is a Muslim. Did you get a call? Did something take place for you to tone down suddenly? If so, I guess we do live in a country controlled by tyrants. Most of all, please do not tell me to calm down while Obama is driving us into a complete and total Socialistic state.

During 2008, I guess you and others did not get the message, either you're for Obama or you're against Obama. I choose Capitalism David. I choose a radical free America without Obamanites telling us how to feel, what to do, what to buy, if we are to be depressed, or if we should cheer up.

and agitate, agitate, agitate till the lid pops off.

I’m suspecting Horowitz was quoted out of context.

Maybe so, but I detect a pattern amongst those on the Right who are abused by the War Room of the left...the MSM/Hollywood/DNC/Academia monopoly.

This 24/7/365 campaign against ones self, family, career, reputation and livelihood can be debilitating.

And don't forget, this has been going on for over 2 decades, with no let up....(look at Palin, her family, her kids boyfriend family), it is destructive to the core. So far she is answering their attacks, but how long can she last?

The left does this to our candidates, officeholders, AND our media. So, when one of our own concedes under pressure, we should pull him off the battlefield, and replace him with another.

And in the meantime figure a way to shut down this War Room for good. This should begin with their media...every DNC hack journalist by name.

Make them fear us.....give them a taste of what it is like to be afraid.
