Anti-Obama talk worries some on right By: Michael Calderone April 4, 2009 06:45 AM EST

While Washington policy makers coped with 21st century political problems this week, some conservative talkers were dredging up 20th-century "-isms."

Glenn Beck, who graced the cover of The New York Times on Monday, teased Friday’s episode of his increasingly popular new Fox News show with images of Stalin, Lenin and Hitler, while telling audiences on Wednesday’s show that he was wrong to have said the Obama administration is leading America to socialism — it’s actually fascism.

“They’re marching us towards 1984,” Beck said. "Big Brother, he’s watching.”

Although Beck’s brand of libertarian conservatism has generated a strong following, some members of the right-leaning commentariat openly doubt whether such heated rhetoric is helpful to the Republican Party or the conservative movement at large.

Conservative author David Horowitz, himself no stranger to controversy or heated accusations, warns that the criticism of Obama among some conservatives has approached “over-the-top hysteria." It’s not just Stalin comparisons, Horowitz wrote this past week on FrontPageMag.com — one contributor likened the president to David Koresh, Charles Manson and Saddam Hussein.

Borrowing from conservative writer Charles Krauthammer — who in 2003 coined the term “Bush derangement syndrome” to describe some Bush haters — Horowitz dubbed the piece, “Obama Derangement Syndrome.”

“Conservatives, please,” Horowtiz said. “Let's not duplicate the manias of the left as we figure out how to deal with Mr. Obama. He is not exactly the anti-Christ, although a disturbing number of people on the right are convinced he is.”

LOL, my age adjusted vision could not tell those were figurines until I read back through the post. They looked real and the beast looked like a mutant bearfox. Good thing for those ‘little people’.

Horowitz is being reasonable. Name calling just makes those that LOVE Obama (which is the majority)change the channel. It's a substitute for an argument, the argument is why what he is doing is wrong. Why is it bad? Calling him a communist and radical did not get McCain elected. In fact, those that call Obama names call the Obama lovers names. It might feel good but it is not going to hurt him.

Good point worth saying.

Democrats won BIG because they were over time able to string together a convincing narrative about Bush, not name calling.

There was a lot of name calling too. The narrative building started with the name calling, and the same was probably true of Clinton as well. Overheated rhetoric has become a staple of politics in the Internet age and it didn't stop or start with Obama.

If you were around here when Clinton was President you might say that Clinton wasn't everything we said he was and Bush wasn't all the left made him out to be, so one ought to be skeptical of the wild-eyed rhetoric about Obama. Or you could say that Obama's further from the mainstream than they were, so that whatever attacks we made on Clinton have to be doubled in dealing with the new threat.

I lean towards the former reaction, but it certainly is true that Obama's come to the White House more to the left than Clinton ever was. There's an emptiness and a hollowness to the accusations of Obama being Marxist or Communist or Fascist though. When people talk that way they say more about themselves than about Obama. They're saying that they're more interested in venting emoting than in drawing accurate comparisons.

Thanks for thoughtful response, close to my line of thinking. The Marxist Obama talk may feel good, it may even get the RNC some contributions (Not me), but it is empty and does not gain voters. Democrats are using Rush to re-stimulate the liberal base $$ support after winning election in a similar way.

My thought is that wet noodle Steele should be out there every day exposing what Obama is doing vs what he is saying, and what he promised. He should go on talk shows play clips of Obama. Show everyone what a fake he is. Nothing will work fast. Tell public he is bankrupting country. Tell them that in a few years our country will be in ruins. He should look sad and say he is “concerned” like dems do. Steele calling BoB a Marxist esp when he is popular would backfire.

Hey Kim! I'm emotional I guess, that bow really ticked me off!

And what do you make of the fact that not even Drudge publicized it?

Not many rightwing blogs did either, or serious rightwing media said much.

Is it fear? Is it shock?

Is it that they cannot believe they were taken by this confidence man?

NO!

Some people (especially eastern elitists) just can’t see around their slavish adherence to political correctness. If Obummer were white, they wouldn’t be walking on egg shells as they’re doing now. I can’t and won’t believe these people don’t grasp the reality that it is the intent of the Soros-controlled puppet show to destroy this country and to rebuild it into some horrific mockery of the former Republic. But it is their overiding fear of appearing even slightly racist, which will forever prevent them from joining this apocalyptic battle with the ardor that is desparately needed.

Great response post: Uh, European socialism in America is worse than the advent of the anti-Christ, because at least when this latter guy comes, it means that the real Jesus is about to go all deus ex machina and bring about the REAL utopia, not some man-made nightmare.
I don’t hate Obama personally, I just hate his modus operandi. I don’t trust people who use the amoral Saul Alinsky’s techniques as their lodestar. I hate that he’s expanding the power of the government that will take decades to unravel, if at all. The last president to so thoroughly violate the Tenth Amendment was FDR, and we’re suffering still under the burdens of the entitlements we inherited from him. In the end, those unfunded obligations will ensure that the ship goes down, while the bailouts will just hasten our demise.

I’ll be as hysterical as I want, Mr. Horowitz. If that’s OK with your moderateness.

Obama ALREADY has in place the mechanisms for spying on all of our medical care, and CUTTING IT OFF. I wonder how many Republicans are going to get the plug pulled.

Obama is getting set to force all doctors, nurses, etc., to agree to do abortions—or get a job at Burger King.

Obama is, of course, promoting the killing of as many babies as possible.

So—if he’s not Fascist—what IS a Fascist.

People who can’t face the truth need to get out of politics. They are worse then useless. All they can accomplish is to help keep people asleep.

The idiotic suggestion by so-called 'conservatives' that if Republicans are too harsh in their criticisms of Obama, it will harm the Republican party, is annoying. We tried the John McCain, go-along-to-get-along strategy and it failed, big-time.

Obama is a dedicated socialist and is rapidly setting in motion policies, laws, rules and precedents that will do great harm to our beloved nation. He is a fraud and was elected partly by the left demonizing Bush (with little opposition from Bush and the GOP) for eight years. Now, conservatives are supposed to 'play nice' and avoid harsh criticism? B.S.

Because Obama has charisma and is personally popular (his alleged charm is lost on me) the criticism should not be 'personal' but fact-based and easily understandable. If 'fascist' is an accurate description of Obama's policies, say so - and show why. This is what Glen Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh have done, successfully. Why do you think the left is whining about them? That so-called 'conservatives' are coming out of the woodwork to criticize these folks - and anyone else who tells the truth about Obama - makes one wonder whose side are they are on.

That's what it has come to, now. Taking sides. Obama's radicalism leaves us no choice. We can't just wait him out for 4 or, God forbid, 8 years. If we can't stop him cold, the least we can do is warn our fellow Americans and hope they'll see Obama for what he is and throw out the Democrat majority in congress next year. This would allow congressional Republicans to block many of Obama's plans to socialize America into a second-rate nation as he attempts to 'spread the wealth' and basically destroy capitalism and usurp many of our freedoms.

Frankly, I believe the American people will begin to turn on the now-popular Obama and the congressional Democrats when the economy continues to falter and his moronic plans began to really hit home for the average American i.e. higher taxes and energy bills, etc. If achieving that means telling it like it is about Obama's policies, so be it. Just be prepared to back up the rhetoric with facts - and keep it simple.

Obama is a Marxist and Keyes was right to bring it up.

If the pink tutu Republicans every learned to stand their ground instead of running away we’d win more elections.
