According to US EPA, “Plutonium is considered a man-made element, although scientists have found trace amounts of naturally occurring plutonium produced under highly unusual geologic circumstances.”

So it’s present naturally in the environment, just not very much of it. I suspect you are correct to right than I was.

I bet it’s the “natural chain reaction” area in what used to be called Gabon (Africa). That’s a very unusual area.
