Gingrich Warns of Conservative 3rd Party in 2012

Friday, April 3, 2009 8:53 AM

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warns that conservatives could leave the GOP and form a third party in 2012 if Republicans don’t do more to rein in government spending.

“If the Republicans can’t break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012, Gingrich said during an address to students at the College of the Ozarks in Missouri.

Thank you for that post about Mr. Gingrich’s conservative bonafides. Very good thoughts. I too, would be much encouraged with someone like Newt at the chair of the GOP.

I still keep asking about the process that brought Steele to the chair, but don’t get any answers, and I just do not understand his selection.

Affirmative action?

Everybody's second choice?

A safe pick?

Someone who is black and can therefore criticize a black president?

To give the party a black face?

To blunt criticism that Republicans are racist?

The frank truth is that Mr. Gingrich is NOT a likeable fellow and long ago lost the authoritative voice of a leader. Is he a thinker? Of course.

But when he declared on BO's show this week that he was for offering a path to citizenship (what euphemistic tomfoolery!), I vowed never to listen to another idea of his.

Very well stated post. I have a lot of respect for Newt, and think he would be a great person to head the RNC or some other position where his grasp of the battle we are in can be used to lead the charge.

I truly do not think we have until 2012 to blunt what is happening.

When the person sleeping in the White House can fire the President of General Motors (however bad he deserves it) and reshape the board of directors, use open election fraud organizations to cook the books on the census, and financially destroy the nation to allow his foreign and domestic globalist friends to pick our bones it is a “Declaration of War” against the American People and our Constitution.

A Free People will not allow this travesty to take place. It is time for us to immediately lean hard on our elected officials to Stop this insanity.

Ben Franklin-

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.”

Nearly 60 years ago I can remember how vehemently the Libs reacted to the president of General Motors, a fellow named Wilson if I recall correctly, when he said that "the business of America is business."

Them Libs sure can hold a grudge. It took them 60 years but they got him.

They had infinite time to wait, but you are correct, we do not have until 2012.

As I read along thru the posts I was thinking that one submitted by yourself might just pop up. Kudos to you for injecting some soberness into the topic.
But, unless I am misunderstanding, you state that you don't believe, because of his personal bio, that NG could successfully win the presidency, though you think he'd be ideal for RNC chairman, (as I do).
You later insist that - "Those who object to Gingrich have an obligation to put forward the name of a better candidate either for chairman of the party or for president". This is where it gets a little fuzzy for me.

Would Palin/Gingrich not be a viable ticket? If not, why?
Regardless, if we win back the White House in 2012, no matter who is POTUS, Gingrich's involvement in that admin would be crucial and I hope, desired.

I wish people would stop with Palin. I like her but she is another guaranteed loss for us.For this country to survive we need an almost historic figure to lead us . Palin is not that person.

And I wish people would stop stating, "I wish people would stop with Palin".
Here's an idea, in lieu of simply throwing out generic critiques of the lady why not specifically state why, in your opinion, she could not win the presidency?
As for historical figures, I believe Jefferson and Reagan to meet that criteria, and I place Sarah Palin on the the exact level as those two men. Both Jefferson and Reagan would be championing Sarah Palin if alive today.

Conservatives only make up 1/3 of the electorate. And not every conservative will vote for this third party, some will want to stay with the GOP. Se let's assume optimistically this new conservative third party could garner 60% of the conservative vote for that candidate or about 18% of the electorate. Heck let's even assume it gets 20% by throwing in libertarians and libertarian leaning indies who might vote for this party. This means the conservative candidate will need to pick off at least an additional 13.5% of the electorate in enough states to put themselves over 270.

How many moderates and swing voters are going to vote for a doctrinaire conservative presidential candidate? Especially one that has not one but two major parties and their resources being levied against them?

It ain't impossible but this candidate would need at least $1 billion (probably a lot more would be needed) to take on both parties machines and their established campaign infrastructure and voter biases.

The best shot any conservative third party would have at truly having influence would be to focus on winning seats in the house and senate. Now after a few election cycles when the party has an established presence in congress, a more experienced campaign machine, and enough time for voters to see the party as not an overnight sensation but a real political force then it might be possible to run a Presidential Candidate. But they still would need a boat load of cash.

The GOP is dead. It’s grown into the RAT party thru osmosis. We need a third party. I will never ever vote Republican again. Ever!

palin is a tool to more true conservative candidates with ACTUAL people skills.

the RINOs are trying to spin palin polularity as “just a woman” so they are going to force feed via DBM some other woman.

Palin keep mccain from a humiliating defeat and the republicans from even worse loses. the RINOs of the RNC are in denial from reality. (probobly hip hop defness from the Mr. Steele jam concert)

On the left, the Maoists and Stalinists get along when it comes to taking away everyone's freedom. The feminists and gays even pretend to be great friends with the Islamists. Militant secularists even support it when the Islamists try and impose religious censorship! Advocates of "nonviolence" champion the cause of violent criminals and terrorists! All of these people on the far left usually work effectively together.

On our side, libertarians and religious conservatives often are not even on speaking terms. Some fiscal conservatives are focused on taxes and little else. We are fragmented - everyone is in his little corner, thankful that he is too "pure" to talk to "those people" over there. Oh, we can fight, all right, as long as it is among ourselves. We can fight about medical marajuana, or about a flag burning amendment, or about teaching creationism in public schools. But when the Marxists want to enslave our children, we complain and eventually go back to our corner. When the Islamists tell us they want to kill our children, we complain louder from our little corner. The barbarians have stormed the gates and they are almost at the door, meanwhile we are busy arguing amongst ourselves about the finer points of interior decorating.

Start locally, and move those people up nationally as they earn it. Concentrate on grooming our GOVERNORS for higher office;

That is the right way to do it, but expect resistance within the party the whole way. The GOP has been anti-conservative for most of its life, as history shows. Even Ronald Reagan was essentially an outsider who fortunately had the great state of California behind him.

IF the GOP were serious about regaining majority status they would be following the example of Howard Dean and his 50-state strategy. Pour money and resources into every state and concede nothing. The incumbents will fight against it just as the 'rat incumbents did, but so what. We've had enough of the republican party mugwumps.

The ambivalence you sense comes from my real ambivalence. I could certainly accept a Palin/Gingrich ticket. I think a Gingrich/Palin ticket would probably sell better but much depends on Palin's ability to pick up her game. She has all the right instincts. Anticipating the defeat to come, I tried to see where Sarah Palin might find her stride and I wrote this a couple of weeks before the last election:

Virtually the only national voice of any elected official which the party will be able to muster will be Sarah Palin and her qualities are not yet honed and perfected to the degree necessary to function independently as the popular leader of a great American party. She has the natural gifts which could make her a legendary politician in the years to come. I hope she spends the long Alaska winters working on and polishing her public persona so that she never again will be exposed as she was by Katie Couric. She has the purity of spirit and she has the courage. With a little bit of forensic training and a leavening of gravitas, Sarah Palin might emerge as a great Republican leader. The question is, will she also emerge as a great conservative leader?

In the same post I said this about Gingrich after looking at Giuliani:

Mayor Giuliani is disqualified by virtue of his doctrinal unorthodoxy and his personal biography from any elected national position with one exception: he would make an excellent chairman of the Republican National Committee. He can make a hell of a speech and he can debate. He's a tiger and God knows we will need a tiger fighting for the party. We will need especially someone who can get press attention and hold the public's attention. More, we need someone who can kick ass and take names There's only one other figure who can match Giuliani in this regard.

And that figure is Newt Gingrich. However, he too has disqualified himself by virtue of his personal biography and he cannot get support of the rank and file for elected office. But he is a font of ideas at a time when the Republican Party is fresh out of any new ideas. We desperately need his intellectual energy. Do not forget that of all of the potential leaders of the party mentioned so far only one has demonstrated the capacity to organize a guerrilla against entrenched Democrat majorities and lead the party to victory and into majority status. Do not fail to remember that he did that in the teeth of resistance from the Rockefeller wing of the party. Gingrich can make a speech and he can marshal arguments and he can skewer Democrats without raising a sweat. Gingrich could also head the national party but I think there would be ill considered but widespread resistance to any move he might make in that direction. We must not be foolish and fail to somehow take advantage of Gingrich's political genius.

So you tell me what I think about Newt Gingrich as president. I could easily live with him as president and I would certainly support him as a candidate but I'm not sure that he is the best possible candidate or that he can overcome the baggage which, in my judgment, unfairly burdens him. There is just something visceral about the reaction to Gingrich that is not generated by other candidates with worse biographies. For example, I received a reply from org.whodat which consisted solely of "ROFLOL" which I take to mean he is skeptical of the Gingrich candidacy. As usual, no one comes forward prepared to defend another name.

If not Gingrich as chairman of the party, who? Let Gingrich run for president and if he can generate support, he is certainly a qualified and proven conservative while in office and the party should support him. If he does not generate support, Gingrich will, in my judgment, not break from the party; he will support the nominee as he always has done unless the nominee fails to put down a marker on spending. You might recall that Gingrich led a group off the reservation against George H. W. Bush when he broke his no new taxes pledge. Gingrich was right, Bush clearly was wrong. I believe this spending is an issue which is and always has been make or break for Gingrich.

The way for a third party to both succeed, and *not* act as a spoiler to the Republican party is very plain:

1) DO NOT run a presidential candidate. They almost can’t win. They consume all your resources. They provide a target for unfair criticism.

2) Put all emphasis on defeating weak Democrat congressmen in “soft seats”, where the Republican candidate is either weak or a RINO. This also forces the Democrats to commit more resources by increasing the number of their “at risk” seats.

3) Create a Contract With America 2. And how this is done is crucial.

To start with, the third party must develop a simple, straightforward platform of objectives, in a “bullet” format. Say, 30 things that everyone in the party wants.

Then, poll the public about that list, and select *their* top 10 favorite items, out of the 30, that both you and they support.

This list of 10 things is your platform. This is done to Keep Things Simple and Clear for the Public. And importantly, they may not entirely agree with your message, but the public truly admires clarity and honesty. This gets you a LOT of votes.

No double speak. No voting against something before you vote for it. No being mealy mouthed.

And ALL candidates for the third party agree in writing for this platform of 10 items, or they DO NOT RUN as candidates from your party.

The realistic objective here is to win a small number of seats each election, until the third party becomes a swing vote. This gives it far more power than its size, and gets its agenda items passed with the sponsorship of the big parties.

I can name many Republicans that would not be trying to socialize medicine, create cap and trade, replace CEOs at private companies and concede to world leaders that the U.S. is nothing more than one of twenty countries in this world crisis together.

As a lifelong conservative and a 40+ year Republican, I haven’t given up on the GOP yet.

It is 50+ plus years for me, and I've given up on Republicans. This Nation requires some serious work, from the ground up.
