Many Republicans boycott judicial nominee hearing
Associated Press ^ | April 1, 2009 | Larry Margasak

Most Republicans boycotted the hearing Wednesday for President Barack Obama's first judicial nominee, allowing Democrats to pitch softballs to David Hamilton in his quest for a seat on a Midwestern appeals court.

The committee will not vote on the nomination for several weeks. But with Republicans complaining of inadequate preparation time, the hearing signaled a rocky beginning to Obama's attempt to remake the federal judiciary.

Hamilton, a U.S. district judge from Indiana, has issued a number of controversial rulings in more than 1,100 opinions and nearly 15 years on the bench. He struck down the use of sectarian prayer to open the Indiana legislature and also ruled against a state law that required a woman seeking abortion services to receive counseling from her doctor. The counseling was required at least 18 hours before the procedure.

Both decisions were reversed by the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, where Hamilton would serve if confirmed. The circuit hears appeals from lower courts in Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois.

David Hamilton is a radical leftist and militant secularist. It’s appalling that Obama chose him, but not surprising. The only good news is that Republicans are so far standing firm, and even the Specter seems to be getting with the program.

“The other Republican to show up was Indiana’s senior senator, Richard Lugar, who couldn’t say enough to praise Hamilton’s qualifications.”

I don’t know Lugar very well, but does the dems have sex tapes on him or something? How can any republican praise this guy?

The President is trying to move as fast as he can in the hopes that others won’t be able to keep up with everything he wants to do. Republicans best put the brakes on him so they have time to see what he is really trying to do. What if no one showed up at the hearings?

I think that the boycott is the beginning. The ‘Rats are trying to rush this guy into the judiciary and Republicans refused to play ball. But they need time to get Hamilton’s record out to the public.

I think that Lugar is friends with David Hamilton’s father, a former Congressman who is also from Indiana.

Boycotting the hearing at this point is more radical than showing up and asking questions that won't be covered by the media and thus sends a stronger message IMO.

Does this mean that his decisions in the 7th will now have to go to the SCOTUS? Is zerO going to turn all the District Courts into clones of the 9th?

Wait ‘til O’Bama ups the count in the SCOTUS and begins to fill the spots with his Leftist friends. As the man once said, “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

IMO, any Republican that doesn’t get with the program, gets voted out!

Seems to me, with this recent budget vote, all the Republicans should just COME HOME and go to work at the grass roots level ... no sense in having offices in DC ... they can make NO DIFFERENCE. Wonder what would happen if they all came home and just left the Dems there?

I agree with you. Never, never surrender the field of battle.

Their field of battle was that judicial hearing room.

America needs to make a statement and that is Congress must be voted out; every last one of them.

Lugar didn’t even have a Democrat opponent in 2006. They’re very happy with him. He’s long past time that he should’ve been retired.

Damn right...they should be raising hell over this...their voice is the only power we have right now in Congress...they will be outvoted by the Dems, of course, but in the process they should at least be exposing these despicable Obama court selections to the general public.

The dems put Clarence Thomas and Bork through hell, we need to start doing the same to every last one of his anti-American, anti-Christian nominees..
