VIDEO: Romney backs Obama auto decision, praising 'backbone'

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) backed the plan for GM and Chrysler put forth yesterday by President Obama, the candidate Romney may face in the 2012 presidential election.

"I think a lot of people expected the president just to cave, write a check, and just hope for the better," Romney said Tuesday morning on CNN. "I think he's expressing some backbone on this."

Romney grew up in Michigan, where his father was governor and, at one time, chairman of a now-defunct auto company. The former 2008 presidential candidate, though, was also sure to tout his own calls for bankruptcy last year, when Chrysler and GM first approached the government seeking support.

"That's something I think he should have said months ago," Romney claimed. "There were a number of us who said bankruptcy or a bankruptcy-like process was something that was needed to get GM and Chrysler on their feet again."

Romney, who won the Michigan Republican primary during the 2008 nominating process, called for the use of the "club" of bankruptcy to force the restructuring of the state's native industry.

Little late to have an awakening after you’ve violated the constitution by extorting a CEO and board members to resign.
That’s not backbone.
That was a socialist coup. Financing after that is merely a formality. Next will be bigger and better - an oil company perhaps.
If Romney can’t tell the difference between this and a normal bankrupcy proceeding, he’s delusional.

What he is talking about is OBAMA.

No real politician ever, ever gives his principle opponents backing and cover unless he is trying to cut a deal.
What possible advantage could this possibly get him?

This was stupid

Now Jim, aren’t you being a wee bit harsh?

You know we have been informed by his sycophants here on FR that he is the best in Conservative values.

And they may have a point you know, after all he has...

Um...

Well..

Yup, you’re right, socialist...

I don’t get it - people were crying about the bailouts of the auto and banking industries, and now people here are crying about allowing the two auto companies to file for bankruptcy so that they can reorganize and become more competitive. What’s the problem with this idea???

I think you & I are the only two here to watch the video.

I agree with Romney - let them go into bankruptcy rather than simply take bailout checks.

That is the conservative position imho.

The problem is letting Obama be in charge of any of it. Since when has bankruptcy been run through executive branch?

Mitt is absolutely right. Not one taxpayer dime should have been spent on this losing enterprise until they restructured.

His "praise" is more like a back-handed insult as it clearly implies that Obama has shown no backbone whatsoever up until this point. That's true too. We fully expected Obama to just keeping writing checks and throwing good money after bad.

“This is their guy, the GOP wants Romney”

And they completely ignore the will of the people. Sarah Palin, as we know, is extremely popular among Republicans (and even some Democrats and independents). She is the only one who can unseat Obama.

Romney can’t do it. If the liberals thought Romney was a real threat to them, they would be all over him. But they’re not.

They’re all after Sarah. They won’t stop their ruthless smear campaign. They know who she is and what she is capable of doing. She is a threat to everything they stand for.

And that, my friends, is why we NEED Sarah Palin. We all need to rally behind her.

And this my friends is exactly why Sarah Palin wants NOTHING to do with the GOP..

Constitution Party all the way folks. The GOP is DEAD.

What Romney said in the video (if anyone cares to watch it) is that he would rather see GM & Chrysler reorganize under the bankruptcy laws of the United States rather than simply taking bailout checks.

yes, instead of just focusing on the bankruptcy idea, he went further and gave Obama credit. You can’t give any credit to a president who fires the CEO and wants to run the entire company.

Is Obama in charge of GM and Chrysler filing bankruptcy? Or, is he stating that this is what should happen instead of more bailouts that don’t work??? If it’s the former, then, yes - I’m opposed to the concept. But, if it’s done through the usual channels, I don’t care who proposes it. It’s the right thing to do.

Mr. Romney forgets that we loaded GM $25 Billion that we’ll never see again. Fiscal irresponsibility.

Was that ‘backbone’?

Mr. Romney forgets the Obama fired the CEO, asked for their recovery plan and then claimed that he wasn’t going to get into the business of running a car manufacturer. Exceeding his Constitutional authority.

Was that ‘backbone’?

Obama has yet to address the real reason that GM is in the dumps: unreasonable union contracts. Payback to his union donors.

Was that ‘backbone’?

Obama has promised to force car companies to make ‘green’ cars that have been proven to have low demand with other manufacturers. Payback to environmentalists.

Was that ‘backbone’?
