G20 summit protesters have forced their way inside a Royal Bank of Scotland office in the City amid violent clashes with police as world leaders gather in London.
Anarchists smashed windows of the building on Threadneedle Street near the Bank of England and looted office equipment and papers, throwing smoke grenades, chairs and eggs.
A printer was seen being thrown out of a window as the group of protesters, many with their faces covered by bandanas, ransacked the office, despite a huge security operation to protect Europe's financial capital.
Riot police have been deployed near the scene but the protesters appeared had a clear run of the building for several minutes. The bailed-out bank was known to be a target of anti-capitalist groups in advance of the protests, but police efforts had concentrated on defending its headquarters on Bishopsgate in Liverpool Street, around half a mile away.
Earlier, eleven arrests were reported before a tense standoff developed between rows of police holding batons and a surging crowd outside the Bank of England.
One man, bleeding from the head, was repeatedly seen to apparently goad officers, who did not respond.
At one point, a black-clad masked man in the crowd struck an officer with a long pole. The officer was pulled away by colleagues and required treatment at the scene.
Scotland Yard said around 4,000 people had gathered outside the Bank and cordons had been put up in response to "increasing levels of violence".
A spokesman said: "There are currently police cordons in place at Princes Street, Queen Victoria Street, Walbrook Street, King William Street, Lombard Street, Cornhill and Threadneedle Street."
He added: "There have been a number of missiles thrown at officers and a number of surges at the police cordons, and increasing levels of violence towards police.

Whoa Looter guy is on Brit vacation
Get out the water cannons and wash the scum away!
What would Winston Churchill Do?
I seem to recall him wanting to set up machine gun nests to use against striking coal mingers I’m sure he’d think up something equally effective for these protesters.
Beat the hell out of Anarchists!....
The looters will be disappointed if they make their way into the Royal Bank of Scotland’s vaults and find that all the money is in sacks of farthings.
I notice that the media is now referring to these protesters as “anarchists.”
I don’t remember them being called “anarchists” very much when they were all protesting BUSH.

Not true. It is often alleged he ordered troops to move to break up striking miners but it never happened, and he never gave those orders.
He wouldnt have put up with this nonsense however.
The fourth picture down says it all...this is all just one gigantic photo-opportunity. Theres probably about five of these nutters in total.
This is a very relevant observation I’m about to make. The British sure do have handsome police.
