It's a traditional subject in medieval European art, in response to the Muslim conquest of Spain and piracy in the Mediterranean, as well as the eventual conquest of Byzantium.

Dante famously portrays Mohammed in hell. One of the earliest illustrations of the Inferno has Dante, who is daily eviscerated by devils, showing his guts to Dante, who is being led through the level of the heretics by his guide Virgil:
