WASHINGTON (CNN) -- While President Obama has insisted that securing Afghanistan against a rise in terrorist groups is a top priority in the war on terrorism, Sen. John McCain said Tuesday that the problems in that country are not as thorny as those in Iraq.
"It's [Afghanistan's] not as tough as Iraq, and don't let anyone tell you that it is, because when we started the [2007] surge, Iraq was virtually in a state of collapse," McCain said during a speech at The Foreign Policy Initiative.
. . . . .
McCain also said that like him, many Republicans support Obama's plan in Afghanistan, but that will probably change. "I don't think there's any doubt that in a year from now, we will be looking at a greater level of opposition to the war than we are seeing today," he said.

don’t underestimate Obama in messing up Afghanistan as he searches for those elusive Moderate Taliban in the mist
mcamnesty’s private parts have got to hurt after he stomped on them a dozen times today.
LLS
Moderate Taliban = Terrorist out of ammo.
McCain is an idiot. The Iraqis had some idea of a fairly modern society and Saddam was fairly secularist. Iraq is tribal but Afghanistan is far more tribal. Iraq may hold together because the Kurds are fairly stable and the Sunni and Shia hate each other so maybe they will check each other’s power plus they have oil.
Afghanistan? Forget it. It is quicksand as many countries have found. Alliances are slways shifting, Pakistan and Iran are always meddling.
“....”It’s [Afghanistan’s] not as tough as Iraq, and don’t let anyone tell you that it is...”
He’s right on this one. 0bama is simply following the Bush plan under his brand to claim the ‘glory’ of a war time Pres_ent. We should support his efforts so long as he isn’t screwing up.
Then, again, what’s the timeline? What’s the exit strategy?
Exit strategy? How ‘bout we take off and nuke’em from space?
Before the Iraq war McCain said that there is no history of violence between the Sunnis and Shiites.
Our govt does not realize that this war is forever.
McStupid cound not be more wrong.
From terrain to tribal ways, A-stan will be a much tougher slog than Iraq.
A-stan has swallowed every foreign power that has come its way—slowly and painfully.
We cannot wage a PC war and expect to win there.
We have not even been able to cut off the poppy crop that fuels half the heroin production in the world.
And we have a standing army there.
Hey Hillary, is that one our fault, too?
Are you serious? They hate each other with a passion. Supposedly even more than infidels.
Yep, one night I was bored and I put on MSN for some laughs and they showed the clip of the interview. Our govt is IGNORANT.
McCain is dead wrong on this...
IMHO There us only one strategy that will work in Afghanistan:
Flood the sky with drones, kill everything that moves within five miles of the border, kill anything that moves after dark, and kill any yihadis spotted during the day.
The war in Afghanistan would be over in a year.
Other than that, Afghanistan will be a graveyard of American soldiers. No invader can control the mountains by conventional warfare....just ask the Russians.
Gonna be much worse then a PC war. Obama just stated last Sunday that our primary concern in that region is stabilizing and supporting the Pakistani government. How is ramping up troops into Afghanistan going to accomplish that ? Are we going to flood Pakistan with hundreds of drones ? It was our invasion of Afghanistan that forced the Islamic Extremists into Pakistan in the first place. It was our insistence that Benazir BHUTTO run for President, that got her killed. What exactly can America do in Afghanistan that stabilizes the government in Pakistan ?
And nowhere near as tough as calming Meghan down when Mickey D’s was temporarily out of Shamrock Shakes earlier this month.....
Would someone tell that addle-brained loser to stfu?
He’s the main reason “Emperor-for-life” Barack Obama got elected president.
Thanks a lot, John.
