The Republican Budget: Let the Debate Begin
Human Events ^ | March.31, 2009 | Congressman Mike Pence

Posted on 03/31/2009 9:27:07 AM PDT by Reagan Man

These are difficult times in the life of our nation. Unemployment is at 9.4 percent in Indiana, and still higher in many of the counties I represent.

I've seen the impact of this recession firsthand, meeting with farmers and small business owners throughout my district. They are in survival mode, making tough choices and practicing the kind of fiscal restraint necessary to get their businesses, families and farms through these tough times.

The Hoosiers I've met with are making sacrifices when it comes to their own budgets and want Washington to do the same.

Yet, while families all across Indiana are finding their way through this downturned economy, it's a starkly different scene in Washington, D.C.

Sadly, the budget that has been proposed by President Obama spends too much, borrows too much and taxes too much.

While Hoosiers are saving until tomorrow what they can't spend today, Washington has continued on a reckless spending spree of bailouts and massive expansion of government programs. The president's budget increases spending to the highest level since World War II, and one independent estimate suggests that the federal government would have to hire 250,000 new bureaucrats just to spend the money.

While Indiana is losing an average of 12,000 jobs per month, the president's budget contains $1.9 trillion in tax increases on virtually every taxpayer, small business and family farms -- including a new national energy tax that will cost up to $3,128 per household. Raising taxes, particularly on small business, during these difficult economic times is not a prescription for recovery; it is a prescription for economic decline.

While Hoosiers are working hard to preserve a secure and prosperous future, the president's budget will add nearly $1 trillion to the national debt every year for the next 10 years for a total of $9.3 trillion. Instead of controlling spending, this administration seems intent on spending money we don't have and piling massive debt on our children and grandchildren. In a word, the President has submitted the most fiscally irresponsible budget in American history.

Hoosiers deserve better, and I believe there is a better way to provide Americans with freedom and prosperity. That is why a few days ago Republicans laid out our blueprint for economic recovery that curbs spending, creates jobs, lowers taxes, controls debt and is built on principles of growth (www.gop.gov).

The "Republican Road to Recovery" is a blueprint for a substantive, comprehensive budget alternative that will be introduced on the floor of the House of Representatives this week. The Republican budget will be built on the values Hoosiers are practicing every day.

Instead of massive government spending, Republicans will seek to ensure that the federal budget cannot grow faster than family budgets. Instead of raising taxes on virtually all Hoosiers in the midst of a recession, Republicans will seek to reduce the tax burden on working families, small businesses and family farms in order to create jobs and unlock private capital. The Republican budget will keep energy and fuel costs low, end the era of bailouts and reform the financial system.

As a substantive debate about how to get our economy growing again begins to unfold, Republicans will continue to offer better solutions that are built on the time-honored principles of fiscal responsibility and growth. Let the debate begin.

That’s nice. When the GOP returns to Reagan conservatism, I’ll listen. I understand Mr. Pence is one of the few real conservatives left standing - correct?

You know, this reminds me of the old joke about the 40 year old virgin bride who had been married 4 times. When she asked for a white dress at the dress shop, the seamstress objected, because the woman had been married previously.

The bride to be explained that her first husband was a gynecologist and all he wanted to do was look. Her second husband was a psychologist and all he wanted to so was explore why she wanted it. Her third husband was a lawyer, and all he did was talk about how good it was going to be.
Her fourth husband was a philatelist.

“God, I miss him,” she said...

The Republicans are telling us how good it’s going to be, and I’m sure we’re in for a big disappointment.

Your issues and concerns are held by most FReepers. The GOP House has a solid conservative base that is steadfast in promoting Reaganism and are united against Obama and the Dems. Pence is part of that House coalition called, The Republican Study Committee. This group of conservatives is the closet thing we have to the Founders/Framers around today.

Here’s a good idea . . .

How about requiring that all budget legislation be submitted with a “recap” page done in excel type spreadsheet format.

Then we could really see a line by line budget that everyone could easily manipulate to offer alternatives - (ya know, kind of like every other business in the world) and skip these verbose pieces of legislative crap.

Oh yeah, we could skip these meaningless statements of empty rhetoric also.

Good, thanks! Since all they can really do now is squawk (and hopefully bring the Blue Dogs to sanity), they need to squawk as loudly and as often as it takes to be heard. Are they doing the special orders speeches like they did before Newt and ‘94 elections? If not, they need to. Free air time on C-SPAN, etc.

Agreed. Those 110 or so conservative GOP voices in the RSC should be much louder. Newt was the best back bench bomber the GOP has ever had in modern times. Following in his footsteps would be a wise decision.

While the 8am crew has been deciding which Republican America should hate this week, IIRC, Republicans have been proposing alternative legislation to what the WH/Dems want to pass...but it gets no coverage. I know there was an alternative stimulus, for instance, I think called the “no cash stimulus”. They really need to be making it clear that they have these alternatives. I don’t feel they are shouting it from the rooftops, in the meantime the media portrays us as the party of “no” with no alternatives.
