In a stunning interview today in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) inadvertently stumbled over the central ethical quandary surrounding earmark legislation:
"If I'm corrupt, it's because I take care of my district," Mr. Murtha said. "My job as a member of Congress is to make sure that we take care of what we see is necessary. Not the bureaucrats who are unelected over there in whatever White House, whether it's Republican or Democrat. Those bureaucrats would like to control everything. Every president would like to have all the power and not have Congress change anything. But we're closest to the people." [emphasis added]
Murtha has come under fire for his connections to the PMA Group, a DC lobbying firm which helps secure earmarks for its clients. The head of PMA is Paul Magliochetti, a former Murtha aide. The New York Times reported this morning that the firm will close it's doors next week.
"If I'm corrupt?" You mean he has some doubts?
And his district keeps voting him back into office...

Isn’t it the job of Congressman to represent their district? To look after their own district?

The earmark system have been misunderstood by Mccain. Its the job of Congress to earmark as much as possible, and not send a blank check th the Executive branch, where they decide how the money should be spent

He barely cleared 60% this last time in a Democrat tidal wave and only because the NRA stepped in at the last minute to save his sorry ass. Bill Russell isn’t going away like all his other opponents. His district is one of the weirdest shaped congressional districts out there, drawn especially for him. It won’t likely be that way after the next census and the brain-dead cities (Johnstown and Monessen) which form his base are losing population to cities like LaTrobe and Washington, which are growing.
Did he steal that from OJ?
There can be no other reason.
