Were they meteors? A comet? UFOs?
People from Maryland to Hampton Roads heard loud explosions and saw brilliant, streaking lights in the sky Sunday night.
There was no immediate explanation, the National Weather Service office in Wakefield said. The Virginia Beach 911 center had numerous calls waiting just before 10 p.m., a supervisor said.
The Weather Service said reports were made from Dorchester County, Md., to the Virginia/North Carolina border. People said they saw a streak in the sky and heard an explosion.
It was orange, like a fireball, said Steve Wagner, who lives in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake and said what he saw was too close to be a shooting star. Wagner was outside cooking with family when he saw the streak. He said he went inside when his daughter called, then heard an explosion that sounded like thunder.
Chris Wamsley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Services Wakefield office, said there could be various causes of the explosions and lights. A team of people is looking into what happened, he said.
Alan MacRobert, senior editor with Sky and Telescope Magazine, said the loud boom that followed the brilliant lights probably means the object probably exploded.
There could be meteorites that fell to the ground, MacRobert said.
If enough observers can provide information on the direction of the object and how high it was in the sky in relation to other objects such as buildings or constellations, scientists could figure out where to organize a search.
Observers can report what they saw last night on the American Meteor Societys page here.
Lindsey Hosek of the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach was jogging along the water with her dog when the sky lit up, she said.
The bright light at first terrified me because I thought somebody was shining a light on me, and then I saw it, and I was in complete awe because it was so beautiful, she said.
Then she saw something that looked like a comet moving low toward the ground; it was blue in front followed by orange and appeared to be the shape and size of a refrigerator.
It was just so low. It was like where a bird should be, she said. It was definitely heading downward.
She was on the phone with a friend a minute later when she heard an explosion.
Kenneth Martin of Chesapeakes South Norfolk neighborhood said he saw what appeared to be lightning, then the sky turned blue.
Then, he said, a white ball of fire shot close to the ground and appeared to burn out. He said hes sure it was a meteor.
It was so vivid in the sky, blinking, he said. It was the strangest thing Ive ever seen.
No damage was reported, the Weather Service said.

According to their site Feb to April fireball can happen every few nites and it unusual.
Wasn’t familiar with the reference - glad you clarified it.
Someone throwing rocks at us and missing.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
That was Hillary’s craft.
OBAMA’S FAULT.
Man, it is so weird that God would go through so much trouble - throwing flaming rocks into the sky - sonic booms - and all the rest. When in the end God could just come right out and say it is him - make some dramatic appearance. Put all the questions to rest. But, instead God is making us “think” by throwing a few rocks at us, at night. Weird.

Or lunacy.

“reports started come in fast and furious to the NWS office in Wakefield last night around 9:45pm.”

Never mind gazillions of installations around DC.
Hi TaraP, I got pinged to this article you posted...
What does MUFON (Mutual UFO Network - http://www.mufon.com/ ) say on this item? I believe they do investigations. I would be useful to hear some of their investigative reports and/or results on it...
I’d like to hear if they’ve determined it was a meteor (meteorite...) or a UFO type of item. Right off the bat, it doesn’t give the appearance of a UFO report, but I would be willing to listen to what MUFON found out (or finds out).
Observed several flashes over the pacific that lit up our location, 14 miles inland. From our vantage point, it was so bright, I was waiting for severe concussions, that never came.
I and others that witnessed this event immediately thought a nuclear exchange or multiple nuclear detonations had occurred. Only flashes, no sound.
So bright, we estimated it lit up 200+ mile area.
Never heard another word or report.
Another story?
A few years ago, sitting at a residence in San Diego, close to the water. Daytime.
All of a sudden an explosion so loud, so immense, pictures fell from the wall. Been through multiple quakes, and this was no quake.
Running outside, many others were already out in the street, all looking upwards.
The 20 year Navy pilot I was with was equally stunned as everyone else, estimated this was at least 20 times louder than any sonic boom he had ever heard. Never heard another word or report about this incident, except a quick report on the radio that day, about others hearing this.
That’s because they know he doesn’t HAVE a brain...
Interesting.
Thanks.
