If there was something bad in the known future, certain powers in the world might cause a lot of its economy to “disappear” as they cached for their own survival, and leave the govts to spend money like “there was no tomorrow!”

Exactly. It's not that difficult to shoehorn what's been happening with the world economy into this scenario. Maybe nutty BUT...
