I used to work at a McDonalds and was still in touch with co-workers after we quit. As one of them pointed out, most of the people who bought McD’s coffee did so BECAUSE it was so hot.
They knew it and they liked it that way; that’s why they bought it.
That said, putting a hot cup of coffee between your legs to hold it was not the brightest idea going, even if the coffee wasn’t so hot. She would have gotten burned by any coffee hot enough to drink until it was too cool to be palatable. She spilled it on herself. IMO, she should not have gotten a settlement.

Well, I’m glad she DID get a settlement. It will never pay for the pain she suffered. Many people do the same thing with their coffee. It’s thoughtless, but until something like this happens to someone else, you don’t think of it as being a big deal.
