It comes from the sixth paragraph of Nicholas Kristof's piece in the March 6, 2007 New York Times, an article entitled "Obama: Man of the World" (the link is http://select.nytimes.com/2007/03/06/opinion/06kristof.html?_r=1):
Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”
Note that Mr. Obama didn't just call the adhan "one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset", but he also recited it. The adhan begins with the shahada, the Muslim credo. Recitation of the shahada is a public declaration that one is a Muslim.
