Incandescent light bulb In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.

President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. The House passed the bill by a 314-100 vote after approval by the Senate last week.

Rep. John D. Dingell, D-Mich., chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the legislation will boost the energy efficiency of "almost every significant product and tool and appliance that we use, from light bulbs to light trucks."

The phase-out of incandescent light is to begin with the 100-watt bulb in 2012 and end in 2014 with the 40-watt.

All light bulbs must use 25 percent to 30 percent less 2014. By 2020, bulbs must be 70 percent more efficient than they are today.

Australia was the first country to announce an outright ban by 2010.

The [LED] light is highly directional

Yup - that's a key difference of most LED lighting. They essentially build LED lights with tiny reflectors right inside them.

For spotlights, flashlights and other purposes that benefit from a quite directional light, this is good. It even works well in situations like traffic stop lights and vehicle tail lights, where the combination of a directional light source and a custom designed lens can provide any specific desired lighting pattern.

But it doesn't work so well for residential room lighting, where one usually wants a broad, minimally directional, flood lighting pattern.

Most reports that I see that brag about how efficient LED lighting is are done by measuring the light that is output at one place, right in "front" of the light. They don't account for whether the rest of the room or other lit area is in relative darkness, or lit with similar brightness.

I bought a couple of these LED light bulbs for the purposes of experimentation.

they produce less light than the bulbs they are alleged to replace. They also have a different spectrum even though they have ~20 LEDs of two different colors.

I tried them outside in the winter and found that they are better than CFLs, but not as good as incandescents.

LEDs are probably the future. CFLs an interim solution.

I've been to their facility in Northern California. I have a Select-a-Tenna that I bought last time I was there, many years ago. Great company!

A bump ping and an update. Regular incandescents are now no longer aviable at Wally World. It seems their supplier GE has done made the switch over or Wally more than likely to save shelf space has stopped stocking them. Those wishing to purchase incandescent bulbs better do so soon. Lowes has Sylvania long life incandescent and regular life ones as of this past weekend. But Wally’s done taken them off their shelves.
