Any bets that the people of Fargo fare better than post-Katrina New Orleans citizens? Anyone? Bueller...Bueller....
New Orleans residents should take note - the people of Fargo are working their asses off to save their city and not whining about how the government should be taking care of them.
They began PREPARING after a huge snowfall a month ago - the writing was on the wall after that.
They are evacuating areas BEFORE the dikes give out as a precaution. The only people needing help to evacuate are those working until the last minute to save their homes.
-No looting is taking place
-Evacuaees are not being robbed and raped
-Volunteers are not being robbed or shot at
-The Fargo Dome is not strewn with sewage and garbage, only sand, sandbags, and volunteers.
-The cities have clearly staged evacuation plans and is communicating effectively with residents.
Although this is a record, serious flooding occurred in about 1968 and 1997 (that flood destroyed much of the downtown area of Grand Forks). My family home is in Fargo (on the North side of town)and safe. Most the area impacted
is on the South side of town in low areas near the river.
On site report: I talked to my brother who lives on the river 10 miles south (Upstream) of Fargo-Moorhead at 11:32 AM local time today and he reports the crest is there at his farm. (Local address 110th Ave S, Moorhead) The water is half way up the topmost sandbags around his house. 1 mile south of him a farmer is reporting a 2 inch drop, and 3 miles south a farmer is reporting a 4 inch drop already. Overnight low was 12 degrees, it is up to 17 degrees. The center channel of the Red River is clear of ice but the calmer areas have ice about 2” thick. There is one more river confluence between there and town (The Wild Rice River) so FM area is close to the crest.
Prayers to all Fargo and Bismarck folks that you come through this well... although we all know you will in the end, not matter how difficult the situation.
