http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/F?c111:4:./temp/~c111IbebAN:e166862:

`SEC. 151. PURPOSE.

`It is the purpose of this subtitle to authorize the operation of, and support for, residential and other service programs that combine the best practices of civilian service with the best aspects of military service, including leadership and team building, to meet national and community needs. Such needs to be met under such programs include those related to--

`(1) natural and other disasters;

`(2) infrastructure improvement;

`(3) environmental stewardship and conservation;

`(4) energy conservation;

`(5) urban and rural development; and

`(6) other unmet needs consistent with the purpose as described in this section.'.

In other words, twenty odd Republicans just voted to establish an Obama brownshirt corps today.

Idiots.

I made a point of reading what McCain had written about his "commitment to public service" before the election.

Putting the "National" in National Service, by Senator John McCain.(^)

William F Buckley was in favor of mandatory public service (The Philosophic Postmortem of William F. Buckley, Jr.(^), The Rule of Reason). McCain references Buckley, saying "Buckley was right, but it's fair to say that it took a while before we conservatives accustomed ourselves to the idea."

There wasn't a nickel's worth of difference between what Obama wants and what McCain wanted. If anything, McCain's ideas are more radical.
