Agreed, but I’m still thinking that is not what she meant to say.

This is a story from CNN. Why is everyone presuming that the quote is accurate? Do you people believe CNN would never twist or misstate a quote from a political figure they openly despise?

Unless you can produce video of her actually saying this, and in the tacky tone and context which the article implies, we have no reliable way of evaluating this.

For myself, absent conclusive evidence, my benefit of the doubt goes to Palin (or pretty much anyone else) over CNN. They are proven liars, with a long track record...

This was primarily a "Piper" story. (Piper to her mom: Praying for God's help in winning the debate against Biden would be "cheating.")
The fact that there were no McCain staffers around at that exact moment (to pray with) sounds more innocent in the original than CNN's coverage implied.
