Obama news conference slips in Nielsen ratings (down 9 million viewers from last month's event)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Taking to the airwaves again to pitch his economic plan, President Barack Obama drew 40 million viewers for his latest news conference, down some 9 million from his first prime-time press encounter last month.

Obama's question-and-answer session with reporters at the White House on Tuesday night capped a weeklong media blitz by the president and was carried by 11 U.S. TV networks, including the Big Four broadcast outlets, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, according to Nielsen Media Research.

By comparison, the first prime-time news conference of his presidency, on February 9, averaged 49.5 million viewers across eight networks, Nielsen reported.

Both events were dominated by discussion of Obama's plans for dealing with the recession and financial crisis.

Facing hesitation in Congress about elements of his recovery plan, even among some in his own Democratic Party, Obama sought to capitalize on his popularity with a string of media appearances in the past week.

Too much of anything starts to wear thin. Remember what happened to Who Wants to be a Millionaire when it was on almost every week night?
This man is on tv every day when I wake up and turn on my tv, sheesh. He’s worse than Clinton ever was.

They're trying the "repeat a lie often enough and they'll believe it" strategy with the top guy.

Problem is...the public isn't buying the lies anymore that they bought during the campaign; hopefully they will soon tire of the messenger.

The ratings are useless anyway. When the president speaks, he basically has a monopoly on tv. What was he on, like 15 channels?

Heck! Compared to B0Z0, Clintoon could be considered a "gentleman" of the "old school".

I could see them trying something to juice up the ratings. Obama Dances with the Stars. He could answer a question and then don his cape and top hat and dance a song with some well known celebrity. It would give him the chance to engage in that non-stop synchronized swimmer-plastered on smile thing he’s got going.

He is worse than Clinton. I even went to Macy’s to shop during the Obamatron press conference - and they were showing it on the TV screen on the wall in the clothing department. Believe me, I stopped shopping quickly because of that!

What's amazing is how much he's on during the DAY. Just watch Fox and CNN from 9:00-4:00 and it seems like he's trying to be on as much as Gibbs.

Gee, makes you pine for the rap videos they used to show.

Wonder when the media is going to get tired of the dog and pony show.

I don’t think everyone is tired of him yet. Yesterday I was with some people who were just tickled pink that Michelle had ordered the kitchen staff out onto the White House lawn to turn it into a garden to grow food. Just like Eleanor Roosevelt! Oh my, they even heard that there would be NO GREEN BEANS because the President, bless his heart, doesn’t like them.

All three of them obviously still deliriously happy with the Great One.

Oh, and they were commenting on how wonderful “health care for everyone” will be.

With that on the TV screen at Macy’s, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone episode Eye of the Beholder where the big Leader’s speech was shown on big screens even in a hospital and one couldn’t escape his haranguing words!
