Congress votes to expand wilderness in 9 states (Land-grabbing Congre$$ in action)

WASHINGTON – Congress has voted to set aside more than 2 million acres in nine states as protected wilderness — from California's Sierra Nevada mountains to the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia.

The legislation, which opponents, mostly Republicans, called a "land grab" that would block energy development on vast swaths of federal land, is on its way to President Barack Obama for his likely signature.

The House passed the bill, 285-140, Wednesday, the final step in a long legislative road that began last year.

The vote came two weeks after the House rejected the bill amid a partisan dispute over gun rights. The measure was brought up again in the Senate, which approved it 77-20, setting up Wednesday's vote.

The bill — a collection of nearly 170 separate measures — represents one of the largest expansions of wilderness protection in a quarter-century. It confers the government's highest level of protection on land in California, Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.

When the alternative energy fantasy ends in more economic collapse, hunger and freezing, our limp brained politicians will have things so screwed up it will take twenty years to dig ourselves out of the hole. The commies will have achieved their tyranny with no energy to make their nightmare work.

Who owns the land now? Is it private or state owned? The article really doesn’t educate.

Sovereignty resolutions are nice, but, if things like this land grab are to stop, the States must openly resist the bloated federal government. I don't mean violence, but the States must do more than bitch.

So there are only 20 real republicans in the Senate?

We’re toast! - We need to replace over 40 Senators just to be able to press on the brakes to stop tyranny.

The legislation, which opponents, mostly Republicans, called a "land grab"

I'd be interested in knowing the source of that particular bit of information. I mean, did they conduct a poll:

1) Do you oppose this legislation?

2) Do you call this legislation a land grab?

3) Are you a Republican?

What a pile of crap.

In almost 20 years of business in the elk hunting capital of the world (not too bad for pronghorn, mule deer, lion, and big black bear either), we have never had an environmental touristen come into the store. Never.

On the other hand, almost daily there are miners, hunters, drillers, and ranchers - or their families - in spending money.

Based on what has happened in South Florida, don’t bet the farm on the above premise.

DOwn in the Everglades, the hunters and the airboat association, the half track association, etc. - all bellied up to the bar of socialism.

They made possible the creation of the Big Cypress National Preserve.

Now, there are some 8% of the original users, and user days.
