FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 09-63

Governor Urges Army Secretary to Continue to Fund ATG Benefits

March 24, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin today encouraged the Secretary of the Army to permanently reinstate retirement payments to former members of the Alaska Territorial Guard. In the alternative, the governor urged the secretary to fund the program through the end of the calendar year.

The Army decided in January to discontinue retirement benefits to ATG members, but temporarily suspended its decision at the urging of Governor Palin and Alaska’s congressional delegation. The Army agreed to extend payments until April, to give Congress time to devise a permanent solution through revisions to existing law. But with so many pressing issues on the table, Congress has not had time to act on this matter.

In the letter to Secretary Preston M. Geren, Governor Palin states, “If you choose to not reverse your position, please extend the emergency funding of these benefits until the end of the calendar year. I appreciate your earlier decision to provide emergency funding through April 1, 2009, under the premise that this would give Congress time to act. However, Congress has had its hands full with bailouts, budgets, and other issues and has not had the time to adequately address this very important matter.

“Congress can likely address this issue, but it will not be until the end of the calendar year. Given the likelihood of action by Congress and the importance of the benefits to the ATG members receiving them, I urge emergency funding of retirement benefits to be continued until the end of the 2009 calendar year.”

In a stunning display of Army hypocrisy, see this story:

Discharge ceremony lauds Alaska Territorial Guard

I posted the original story back in January.

Army cuts off pay for WWII Alaska militia veterans

Here are some of the men who the Army is screwing...

Compare and contrast this to 0bama’s desire to have service connected disabled veterans pay for their treatment at VA hospitals so that he can save $500 million to help fund health care for illegals.

It should also be noted that Palin has won high praise from the Military Order of the Purple Heart for her aid and assistance with a program in Alaska to provide guide dogs to disabled veterans.
