The lapsed AWB is at the federal level. The California DOJ will rule according to which ever standard is stricter. It usually is California and the SKS was judged to be a prohibited assault weapon some years back. There was a brouhaha about sks owners having to turn in their SKS. Initially it was judged to be an assault weapon but needed to be registered. New AG comes in now SKS is in prohibited class so turn in in boys.

The SKS isn’t prohibited in California. They are for sale quite often at Big 5 and the like. If the gun can be argued to be “historical” than it’s exempted. That’s the loophole I think.

That previous (retroactive) ban was on just the SKS variant that could accept detachable AK magazines.

I'm sure the more common fixed-magazine version will be on the ban list now, regardless.
