Bush's false (yet "compassionate") conservatism severely damaged the Republican Party's brand and credibility. Further blows from McCain might have destroyed it outright.
In any case, you only would have bought some time at the expense of the most prominent and best-positioned political mechanism to advance the conservative agenda. And then we would have Obama, or Hillary, or somebody just as bad, except without any opposition at all.
