A Presidential Wake Up Call (Newsweek editorial hits the Pres)
Newsweek ^ | March 20 2009 | Eleanor Clift

Posted on 03/21/2009 1:29:27 PM PDT by lt.america

Who would have thought 55 days into this administration we would be asking the question, what did he know and when did he know it? Word that a provision in the stimulus bill gave the green light for AIG to hand out bonuses using taxpayer money sent the media bloodhounds hot on the trail of whoever is the culprit. For a time, it looked like Senate Banking chairman Chris Dodd would take the fall, but after 24 hours of twisting in the wind, Dodd said the change that exempted past agreements to pay bonuses was made at the request of the administration.

President Obama likes to remind voters that he inherited a mess, and that's true, but this one is of his own making. And until he comes up with a satisfactory explanation of who did what when, and why, his credibility will suffer. Forty-eight hours ago, I didn't think Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was in trouble, but if the transaction with Dodd turns out to have Geithner's fingerprints on it, his job could be in jeopardy. The deadly chain of events may have started innocently enough, with Treasury Department lawyers raising questions about the government retroactively curtailing private-sector contracts, but did Dodd, who authored the restrictive language, capitulate to some Treasury flunky, or did someone more senior lean on him?

“Like Clinton bombing Bosnia to distract away from Monica...”

Don’t forget bombing Baghdad big time! All the lovely Dems forget about it in an attempt to make it seem like Bush was the only one to pick on poor Iraq.

Is anyone else sick of Obama saying, “I take responsibility for it” and the media melting at his (winky) largesse? It’s time for someone to start a tally of everything he’s publicly TAKING responsibility for and HOLD him responsible...he’s asking for it.

I knew Bill Clinton and Obama is no Clinton. He can’t do the blame shuffle like Clinton and won’t come out of this as well.

OK, I really didn’t “know” Clinton but you get the idea.

However you rationalize it, you money goes to liberals who are destroying America.

“Obama was the second largest recipient of campaign funds from AIG behind Dodd. This mess could go straight to the oval office.”

That fact alone should warrant a probe and probably investigation. I get tired of saying this, “but if this were Bush and his administration, could you imagine what would be happening right now....”

He’ll probably survive. Look how popular Clinton was

Clinton had a media behind him in a way Obama can't because they're dying on the vine and the internet is thriving.

Clinton also had a power-at-all-costs wife who had learned political strategy first-hand in the trenches of Watergate. Oshama's wife is too into being First Glamouress to get down and dirty.

Clinton had a charisma which consistently wooed the public and media. Oshama has a surface charisma but it is much shallower than Clinton's and it is strangely behind the times. Going on Leno just won't cut it.

I think the media smells blood...Oshama scandals are a way to get their cable numbers up. I think Oshama just may get it from all sides in a way Clinton didn't.

Back then the economy was doing well, even if it was a bubble. He oculd have lined actresses and interns down the street and floated through.

With the economy bad and many people out of work and losing their homes, they’re feeling a lot less tolerant of Obama. If Obama makes one more serious gaffe, then it may very well spell doom to his presidency.

I worship at the altar of Reagan. Allow me this small aberration. I agree with you, but this station is not really plugged in. (so to speak) BTW I believe and contend that my spell checker is out on a fling with TOTUS. Sorry.

“Back then the economy was doing well..”

I think that is a very good point. I keep telling my brother that if cap and trade hits, the ugly mood in this country will turn toxic. The public will have very little stomach for scandal given what is trying to be crammed down our throats.

“what did he know and when did he know it?”

Easy, just go back and check what and when was typed into the teleprompter.

If Eleanor Clift has realized what a lying POS Obama is, the rest of America is sure to wake up.

Fastest demise of a presidency ever. Couldn’t have happened to a better Marxist. Gee Obama, we hardly knew you.

"... That would unite everyone behind him"

Not being picky mind you; but, in my private polling of everyone I meet, I am unable to locate anyone who voted for the one. Now I ask you, if nobody voted for him, how can anything get everybody behind him?

All good points. And I agree 0bama will go down in history as a bad president. But if it’s to occur soon, it won’t be for ordinary ineptitude or an economic slump. It would take a major terrorist attack or existential threat in the world, or a very stinky smoking gun from someone like Blago or Rezko. None of which is impossible.

I think what Obama needs right now is a good, old fashioned military crisis. That would unite everyone behind him

Depends on who's side he's on.  Either way the country will blame him because Obama is obviously weak.
