Former U.S. Border Patrol agent Ignacio "Nacho" Ramos wakes up in the middle of the night expecting a guard to shine a flashlight in his face. Jose Alonso Compean, his colleague, still has nightmares that he's not really home.
It has not been easy readjusting to life outside their one-man prison cells where they spent the last two years of their lives in segregation.
Since the commutation of their sentences by President Bush on his last day in office, the former agents, who were charged with the non-fatal shooting of a Mexican national after he abandoned a load of marijuana near the border, are learning to live in the world again.
Since being released from prison on Feb 17, both men were confined to house arrest for 31 days and were barred from speaking to the media until their sentences ended Friday.
In an exclusive interview with The Washington Times, the two men, now fighting to have their convictions wiped off the record, spoke of their ordeal since the incident in Fabens, Texas, in 2005 that changed their lives.

Bush’s legacy.
Semper Fi,
Kelly
One of the events that "Bush's fault" really fits. It was not his finest moment.
Bush should have immediately pardoned both of them.
He also testified that he was only smuggling to help his sick mother in Mexico.
Give me a break.
Thanks for posting this article. I prayed a lot for these 2 Patriots. It is unAmerican, what happened to them. Their story is one of many that proves that our country is not what The Founders intended it to be. We must all keep on standing up to fight for America.
Give me a break,
now now..he did put a sign on the van saying, "DRUG SMUGGLING FOR SICK MOTHER! PLEASE DON'T SHOOT!"..what is really sad is that his father got sick..for he came back a second time..poor drug dealer..makes you sad..
I wonder how these guys feel knowing that Lord Zero is running the show?
They feel the same as any other American who's been mercilessly torn up by the cogs of the U.S. government bureaucratic machine.
Even when you're in the right, they're bigger than you.
bump
This should have never happened just as immirgration should have never happened.
This should have never happened just as immirgration should have never happened.
Also love how the prosecutors proved he was “unarmed”. Why, they just asked him several months later of course! Thats the only “proof” that he was unarmed. Bush blew it on this.
And what a hunanitarian the smuggler was, in the middle of the worst drug war in mexican history, only HE ran around with a huge load of dope and decided he wouldnt carry a gun. Pure 100% gold-plated Bullcrap. Of course he was armed.
These 2 Agents are heroes IMHO. I think Sheriff Joe would give them a job in a New York Minute and would have no regrets in doing so.
Don’t worry about the future, Ramos and Compean. The American people have your back!
That goes double for Sheriff Joe!!
Laid at the feet of sutton and bush.I wonder how many people stayed home at election time because of this?Bush just doing his part at wrecking the republican party.
I give Bush a D+ on his presidency. On this issue, he just plain sucked.
PING!
RAMOS/COMPEAN Ping
Please freepmail me if you want on or off this list.
