A seriously ill baby, whose parents lost a court battle to keep him alive on a ventilator, has died. The nine-month-old had a rare metabolic disorder and had brain damage and respiratory failure. His parents had appealed against a ruling at London's High Court that it was in the boy's best interests to withdraw "life-sustaining treatment". Baby OT was unable to breathe by himself and died after doctors withdrew his treatment. His parents said they were "deeply distressed" by the decision of the High Court in London and said the life of their "beautiful boy" was worth preserving. The couple said through their solicitor after the death was announced: "During his short time with us, OT became the focus of our lives. We were present during his last moments, together with [his] extended family. "He died peacefully. We will miss him greatly and wish to say that we are proud to have known our beautiful son for his brief life." The High Court ruling on Thursday gave doctors at an unnamed NHS trust powers to turn off the ventilator that kept Baby OT alive. On Friday, two Court of Appeal judges refused the couple permission to challenge the decision by Mrs Justice Parker made after a 10-day hearing. The baby, his parents and the hospital trust involved in the case cannot be identified, as part of the court ruling. Lord Justice Ward was told the couple had decided to wait outside the courtroom while the ruling was given as they could not face hearing the decision. Prof Sam Leinster of the University of East Anglia school of medicine, told the BBC: "My heart goes out to the family, but also to the medical team. "The court is charged with weighing all the evidence that is put before them.

IT'S COMING TO AMERICA!
That is what is behind “Universal Health Care”.
YOU will NOT be making the decision.
With health care being rationed they will not allow “scarce” resources” which they made “scarce” to be used on someone like this. It will be a no brainer for them.
Oh, BTW. If you're over the age of 65, you can't get kidney dialysis under Britain's national health care.
” The baby, his parents and the hospital trust involved in the case cannot be identified, as part of the court ruling.”
there is still some SHAME.
They don't want to be IDENTIFED.
By keeping this VAGUE you don't visualize real people.
They can all hide in obscurity.
Americans have NO IDEA of the extent to which health care is denied by the Government. Sadly they may soon find out.
How do you raise a child on a ventilator who can’t breathe on his own?
Yes feel sorry but remain obscure.
Don't blame anyone is the message.
Don't vilify anyone.
It's just a decision!
(Lots of sarcasm with that statement.)
This is AWFUL to put in politely.
It is PARENTS that should be deciding this.
Like any other treatment, it should be up to the PARENTS; NOT OBSCURE bureaucrats playing god.
Yes ... wait till they find out!
“During his short time with us, OT became the focus of our lives.
Sheesh...Is that a parent’s responsibility.
I didn’t read it that way. I read the parents were done and wanted the baby taken off support but the courts kept him on life support until he died. We are not connecting together on this one for some reason.
Not being part of the “zero sum crowd” ... NEW breakthroughs happen all the time - thanks to CAPITALISM. There is money to be made in IMPROVING and making BREAKTHROUGHS. ADULT stem cells is just one example of such a breakthrough. Who's to say something could not have been done here? I don't believe in playing god.

It won’t work that way in America. People will not stand for it. In fact, what we are getting out of the British and Canadian Universal Health care is their positives. For example, we will have electronic health care records instead of paper. I think that is the main change to our healthcare that we will see.

The parents were fighting AGAINST the baby to be withdrawn from life support. The courts said it was in the best interest for the baby to be taken off life support.

How did I miss that??? Thanks for posting...
How is keeping someone alive, who couldn't survive on their own, NOT playing God?
Please excuse my flippancy but Obama universal health care IS MODELED AFTER THE UK FAILED SYSTEM.
Don't be fooled. Look at the Democrat stance on DEATH.
You're being fooled ... population control, abortion, even denying a botched abortion medical care and you STILL believe we will take the “positive” parts of the UK’s system? LOL! Welcome to the real world where life is devalued and death is the answer based on age, race and cost with “scarce resources” which is what the UK is up against. WAKE UP!
I understand where you confusion came from.
It’s not well written .... .
It sure isn’t...and this is not the first article that has been poor. I think the 24 hour media has made journalists very lazy.
Just the little people who have to watch their children suffer and die.
Feudalism returns to England under the fraud known as "socialism".
