Nobody's Model Minority (Indo-Americans shouldn't be "actin' white"?)

Recently Forbes ran a contentious article that slipped through the cracks without much commentary. The piece, written by Jason Richwine of the American Enterprise Institute, declared Indian Americans “The New Model Minority,” as if we were competing for the title in a pageant.

Let’s clear this up once and for all. Being called a “model minority” is an unwelcome characterization that is damaging and tough to overcome. Why do you think the “old” model minorities—East Asian Americans—have struggled to shed the label since they were first saddled with it in the 1960s because of “their advanced educations and high earnings.”

Today, the term is largely regarded as a stereotype, and it is surprising that Richwine—and Forbes, for that matter—could be so out of touch.

The phrase “model minority” inherently pits one minority group against others, as Deepa Iyer, executive director of South Asian Americans Leading Together, argues in her response to the Forbes piece. After all, if one community is the “model,” then the others are problematic and less desirable.

In the spring of '08, Al Sharpton was accusing candidate Obama of trying to "grandstand in front of white people." Rap "singer" 50 Cent recently tried to insult Oprah Winfrey with, "(She) started out with black women's views but has been catering to middle-aged white American women for so long that she's become one herself." And Michelle Obama's little frenns used to be tryin' to tell her that she "talked like white girl." Hell, Michelle, only just now beginning to become proud of her country, wrote in her senior thesis at Princeton, "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community," that "there is a distinctive black culture very different from white culture." She also complained that the research behind her thesis seemed to show that black Princeton alumni didn't seem to "maintain a certain level of identification with the black community."

Of course it does. It makes it easier for the democrats to promise everything under the sun to each group to get their votes so the eevvillll conservatives and republicans won't be keepin' y'all down.

You're just too stupid to understand the ploy.

You’re right. The author is worried she might miss out on the goodies that may come her way.

I think it is time for every to start “acting white” or acting american or acting chinese or whatever.

That means work hard, be honest, don’t do drugs or crimes, value education, be thoughtful and responsible.

And it is time for even the whites to start acting white (or maybe it should be “acting asian”).

Everyone has a right to wear South Pole, drink 40’s on the street corner, and live on welfare. Fight for it!
