TULSA, Okla. — One of the most deadly spiders in the world has been found in the produce section of a Tulsa grocery store. An employee of Whole Foods Market found the Brazilian Wandering Spider Sunday in bananas from Honduras and managed to catch it in a container.

The spider was given to University of Tulsa Animal Facilities director Terry Childs who said this type of spider kills more people than any other.

Always check your bananas!

I keep my banana hidden when there are black widows around.

Tarantulas look fearsome but are rather friendly as spiders go!

How are we supposed to check our bananas without running into a spider that might be hidden in the recesses?

Seriously. I eat bananas for breakfast every day and now I’m a little concerned.

Also known as "Banana Spiders, they are the most venomous spider known. They don't even need to bite you, just touching their venom and rubbing your eyes, or a sore will do it.

Aside from causing intense pain, the venom of the spider can also cause priapism - uncomfortable erections that can last for many hours and lead to impotence. The venom may eventually be used in erectile dysfunction treatments.

Hmmm. Dole bananas and Sen. Bob" "Viagra" Dole. Who'd a thunk it?

If I hadn’t walked into the kitchen and filled my water glass, I’d have posted that first! LOL

All that “spidy” stuff made me thirsty.

I wonder if that employee needed to change his underwear when he found out what he had caught.

I don’t hate spiders the way I do cockroaches, but I definitely give them a wide berth. They don’t bother me, I won’t bother them.

“Please help stop hitchhiking bug!”

[To the best of my memory, an old US advertisement for preventing unhealthy bugs from coming across our borders with foreign shipments. ...not sure about the exact wording.]

From petbug.com...

The Brazilian Wandering Spider is not for the "pet keeper". Brazilian Wandering Spiders are extremely fast, extremely venomous, and extremely aggressive.

We have cargo that comes in from Puerto Rico where I work.
Occasionally these hideous creatures make it to our distribution center.

A co-worker that is married to a Puerto Rican lady and has spent quite a bit of time on the island, identified one of these monsters as the dreaded “Banana Spider”.

He informed me that they were bad news, but never mentioned that they were “deadly”. They’re fairly large, and they can scoot across the floor so fast that you can’t catch up to them to stomp ‘em.
