Virginia Notebook: GOP Fights Over Its 'Roots'
http://voices.washingtonpost.com ^ | March 18, 2009 | By Tim Craig

...On Friday, the five Republican U.S. representatives from Virginia called on Frederick to resign, saying "it is the sentiment of the grass-roots membership of the party to move in another direction."

In mounting his defense to the criticism that he mismanaged the party and is incompetent, Frederick used the same term.

"I make no apologies for standing against these efforts to remove me or the changes I've made within our party to give greater authority and input to the grass roots," Frederick wrote in a letter to GOP activists this week.

A year ago, Frederick did create a grass-roots uprising to topple former lieutenant governor John H. Hager, a moderate, as chairman of the state party.

After a three-month campaign, Frederick mobilized several thousand conservative GOP activists to show up at the convention to support him for a four-year term as chairman.

Many GOP leaders now say Frederick has been a failure. In an effort to remove him before his term ends, they have made 10 allegations against him centering on his management style and whether he diverted party business to a company he owns.

But much of the angst over Frederick revolves around his personality, and his having become an easy target for Democrats.

"Its an abysmal situation," said Mike Wade, chairman of the 3rd Congressional District Republican Committee.

It would be an oversimplification to call efforts to oust Frederick a battle between the party's conservatives and moderates.

But it is shaping up to be a contest between pragmatic conservatives who want to reach out to moderates and those who want to stick with their core beliefs on social issues.

AFAIK the entire Virginia delegation voted for it.

I didn’t hear Limbaugh’s explanation. What did he say?

While I have no idea what the dinner conversation are like, I’m just not aware of any instances of Diana Cantor making those campaign issues. That’s all I’m sayin’.

And more importantly, Eric Cantor hasn't squished on those issues over the years.

He has, however, goobered up on this and the previous stimulus vote.

Rep. Eric I. Cantor this week has committed political suicide.

More reasons why America's Independent Party is already the third-largest party in America, even though it hasn't even had its first birthday.

Limbaugh opined along the lines that they did it so now the CEOs wouldn't think to come back again and ask for more money.

I went to Facebook and asked both Cantor and Forbes why they voted for this. Each time my submission appeared on each gentleman's 'wall' but only for two seconds and then it disappeared. I'm not sure if posts there are screened but I have posted on Palin's wall with this not occurring.

Horse hockey.

He’s become a squish. I’m disgusted.

Time to find another party cuz’ the R’s don’t get it.
They don’t understand the anger that is simmering and is about ready to boil over.

Interesting.
I've a neighbor who worked for Diane Cantor when she, Mrs. C, was still with VA529. The neighbor was promoted to asst financial director. I do not exaggerate in saying that if the neighbor is qualified in having anything to do with the finances of a multi-million dollar enterprise I am qualified to pilot the next space shuttle launch.

To be honest, I’m just sick and tired of mincing words.

FWIW, I have become a delegate. They will be getting an earful at the convention. Only Conservatives get my vote. Screw the turncoats.

I just emailed Forbes but I am going to stop by at his Colonial Hgts office this afternoon and seek an answer as to why he voted for HR 1586. Besides Forbes and Cantor there are many conservatives among the 85 Rs who voted likewise.

In all due respect, ice, I think we should at least hear their reasoning for voting ‘yea’. (and don’t yell at me for suggesting this! LOL)

Lucky you, I’m stuck with Glenn Nye. I don’t even think he has an office here on the Eastern Shore. Not that it would do any good to talk to that dimbulb. The entire theme of his campaign seemed to be that Thelma Drake always voted lockstep with the Bush Administration and the GOP.........gee, what kind of independence has Nye shown?

His “independence” and office locations must be the 2 best kept secrets there are on the Eastern Shore :)

These Rockefeller Republicans are going to get another shot in the head at the convention in Richmond.
