Remember this the next time you hear of an Alaska Native Group concerned about the effect of oil or other development on their precious caribou!

Wow, what a waste. Apparently the elders don’t tell stories of starving children in Ethiopia. Waste not, want not.

The discovery and a subsequent lack of cooperation from community elders launched an eight-month investigation, replete with phone taps, undercover operations and examination of Pepsi cans left in the area.

Charged with wanton waste, failure to salvage meat, or both are Point Hope residents Lazarus C. Killigvuk, 25; Randy John Oktollik, 26; Roy Oktollik, 18; Brett Oktollik, 20; Koomalook M. Stone, 18; Chester W. Koonuk, 29; Aqquilluk Hank, 30; and Roy A. Miller, 20.

Troopers first learned about the slaughter from an anonymous tip and, after verifying the death toll in late July, approached village officials in the community of 700 people about 330 miles southwest of Barrow. Instead of cooperation, however, troopers got stonewalled.

Many leaders in the Inupiat Eskimo village were skeptical of the reports, saying details of the killings had been exaggerated and that troopers were handling the case unprofessionally.

Yep, this is worth remembering and bookmarking. Thanks for posting.

The caribou might have benefited from the cover provided by a giant pipeline. If the libs are really “Pro-Caribou and I Vote” like their bumperstickers proclaim, they should be launching a national campaign to vote out the elders. Or, find a way to blame Governor Palin- whichever is more politically correct...

I have done a lot of hunting in Canada and it never failed to amaze me that the Indians were the biggest poachers around.

When one was bragging about all the deer he spotlighted, we asked him if he had any regrets breaking the law and he summed up this attitude by saying “F____ the law”

There are so many things wrong with this, from using low caliber rifles to killing with no intention of eating. Jail time.
