Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney was nominated to be the U.S. ambassador to Ireland by President Barack Obama on Tuesday.

Rooney, 76, is a lifelong Republican, but he endorsed Obama in Pennsylvania's Democratic primary and later campaigned for him in western Pennsylvania during the general election.

"I am honored and grateful that such a dedicated and accomplished individual has agreed to serve as the representative of the United States to the Irish people," said Obama. "Dan Rooney is an unwavering supporter of Irish peace, culture, and education, and I have every confidence that he and Secretary Clinton will ensure America's continued close and unique partnership with Ireland in the years ahead."

Rooney has been president of the Steelers since 1975 and this past season his team won its sixth Super Bowl.

He is in the NFL Hall of Fame and has also received the American Ireland Fund's lifetime achievement award.

I really didn't need another reason to dislike the Squeelers.

But ok.

Saint Patrick reportedly drove the snakes out of Ireland.

And now for the rest of the story.

Those snakes swam to North America where they settled along the rivers in places like Boston and Washington and even Pittsburgh.

Now that Obama is in the White House, he is sending snakes back to Ireland.

In the shots I saw of him during the Superbowl this year he didn’t look like he was in very good health.

Are we going to be moving our Embassy offices to Pittsburg?

“Rooney, 76, is a lifelong Republican, but he endorsed Obama in Pennsylvania’s Democratic primary and later campaigned for him in western Pennsylvania during the general election.”

#####

No true Republican could possibly support a race and class warfare fomenting, Marxist for President.

Or perhaps, we are getting a better definition of what a “Republican” is.....

This man is a Republican like Specter is a Republican - RINO, RINO, RINO. He asked Rush to "disassociate" himself from the Steelers somewhere in the mid to late 90s - that's when Rush started going to San Diego Chargers games.

Dan Rooney is no Republican!

I guess he can be the ambassador after they figure out a way to remove his lips from Obama's a$$. I'm so glad that he thanked Obama for making the Super Bowl possible....

what a douche...

So far, his son, Tom Rooney rep-FL has proven to be as conservative as his father isn’t. I even called Rep Rooneys office and called him out on his father, and asked if he shared his political viewpoint or just his bloodline. The aide snickered and said, “most assuredly, you cannot pick your parents” and they share a bloodline and that is all. Bears watching, but his votes to date, have been 100% on the money, and each item I have called on to date, has had a conservative, excellent, answer. I am on a first name basis with his staff LOL.

Reminds me of Crowe supporting Clinton so he could get
his ambassadorship. Miserable sell-outs!

I hope he can repay the loan he owes his 4 brothers as they sold their shares of the team to avoid the up coming Zero's taxes.

You want to have a real conumdrum; try celebrating a Super Bowl win only to hear the record stop when Rooney thanked Obama, as if HE threw the game winning touchdown.

I’m still reeling in disgust from that little comment.

That sure was a buzz kill, wasn’t it? There we were, covered in our Steeler regalia and bouncing around the room like post-game idiots, and wham! Dan Rooney deflates us all with that little pin poke. Even my 8 yr old son stopped and said “WHAT did he say?!” Ugh...

Honest to God, you could have heard a pin drop at my house when he said that. Then I could hear my ever-articulate (drunk) husband from the other room yell, “Oh for the love of God, SHUT THE F*** UP, ROONEY!”

LOL

My husband’s reaction was utter disgust and some comment like, “Well, thanks for ruining the whole game for me, Dan.”

I tried to console him by suggesting that it may have been a dementia moment but no dice.

The jagoffs should at least get it right: It's 6-Time Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
