SACRAMENTO Graciela Barrios, an undocumented immigrant, has long relied on her Sacramento County health clinic for the advice, medication and tests that keep her diabetes under control.
But next month, Barrios and thousands like her will be on their own as communities cut nonemergency health services to illegal immigrants and more local governments are forced to make similar decisions. Nearby Contra Costa County will vote tomorrow on whether to cut services to the 5,000 illegal immigrants they serve each year.
The general situation there is being faced by nearly every health department across the country, and if not right now, shortly, said Robert M. Pestronk, executive director of the National Association of County and City Health Officials.
Data on health care for unauthorized immigrants are hard to come by because community clinics and hospitals usually do not ask patients for their immigration status. The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that of the 11.9 million illegal immigrants living in the United States, about 59 percent have no health insurance. That accounts for about 15 percent of the nation's approximately 47 million uninsured.

About time.
Now they’re in the same boat as us.....
Allow me to help. Here's a compass. Follow the needle when it points to "S" and just keep on walking.
Don’t worry - Mexico has nationalized health care. As such, I am sure things are much better back there.
The only health care illegals should have is enough emergency care to get them back across the border or to stop them from being contagious during transport.
The only thing they are entitled to is deportation.
Queeeet eating furitos, burritos, and sugaritoes, Graciela, thin you no have diabeeeteees!
Cut?? Just cut??? They shouldn’t get ANY, and those that did scam the system should be made to repay the state for all the free health care they received.
That alone will have a positive impact on other illegal immigrant problems- they run back to the other side to avoid paying.
My hometown’s only hospital had to close it’s doors more than 20 years ago because of illegals. They never did re-open.
Why were they ever given these services as non citizens? I guess this explains a lot as to why California is broke?
If we would lose our insurace the government would not help me to buy my diabetes supplies sinbce we have no children and aren’t old enough for medicare. My diabetes would not go away no matter what I did since I am a type one, so keep that in mind that not all diabetes is caused by being overweight sometimes it is inherited.
No way domenad, perhaps they do things differently in Virginia than they do in Calif.
Head south?
Nope just spread your legs and have more babies and the state of Calif will see the light of day and eventually you too can be a Calif. welfare momma.
I think you meant to respond to a different poster, but rest assured I understand that. Quite a few people develop diabetes regardless of diet, my mother included (all 112 lbs of her).
Queeeet eating furitos, burritos, and sugaritoes, Graciela, thin you no have diabeeeteees!
Surely she can buy her own glucose monitor and do her own testing, and learn to eat properly to keep her diabetes under control buy her own insulin, LIKE I HAVE TO!!!!!!
And while she's at it, Get the h&ll out of my country!!! She can apply to immigrate and enter legally if she likes, then I'd say welcome, now get to work and pay your taxes like I do and see how YOU like paying for freeloaders.
Is this for real? I’m in disbelief.
OPPPSSS sorry about that, it was meandog I meant to respond to.
Ping!
I think we’ve had this up before, this is another source...
I thought that illegal alien criminals didn't impact our state budgets at all!
They are a net asset to our communities!
Politicians, activists and public employees have been telling us that for years now!
Gheeeez!

With realistic estimates of 20 million illegals and 85% uninsured they actually make up 17MM or 36% of the nation's uninsured.
But without them, Obumblehead doesn't have as strong a case to justify his socialized health care agenda. Look for a new 'government health care initiative' to cover the poor 'unfortunates' that had enough stamina to swim the river and cross the desert, but now go to the emergency room for every cough, scratch and sliver.
