Taxes must rise to pay for climate change, MPs warn[UK]

Taxes will need to rise to pay for the green revolution which is necessary to save the planet from global warming, MPs warn today

In a report on the impact of the recession on attempts to transform the UK into a low-carbon economy, an influential Commons committee reveals that levels of green taxes are now falling while overall tax revenues increase.

And the MPs on the Environmental Audit Committee warn that without tax rises or radical cuts in public spending elsewhere, the Government will not be able to afford to continue the "green stimulus package" announced in the pre-Budget report in November.

Last week, the world's leading climate change scientists, gathered in Copenhagen, issued a desperate plea to politicians to take urgent action on climate change or risk catastrophic global warming.

But in their report, the MPs expose the timidity of the Government's response to the crisis, revealing that the £535 million package for low carbon measures announced in the PBR was made up of money brought forward from future budgets.

That means that the Government will either have to cut spending or raise taxes to pay for future measures to "green" the economic recovery.

Tim Yeo, chairman of the committee, said: "The Treasury has announced very little new money for green investments.

"Yet meeting our climate change targets will require a step-change in funding for the low carbon energy sector, especially when the financial crisis has led to a shortage of capital."

In their report, the MPs say that the Treasury's take from green taxes has fallen slightly since 1998, while overall revenues have risen by 30 per cent.

We need to build giant airconditioners around the planet. At a 125% tax rate we can accomplish the monumental feat in 150 years. Green jobs for everyone. This will make the pyramids look like small potatoes. First we must make Obama Pharoe of the world with absolute power.

The message is unambiguous - we must all be poorer to save the Earth. Why can’t the voters hear that?

Headlines suggest the Brits are heading for a 30’s style depresion, yet the green-loons keep demanding higher taxes and additional stresses on the economy. Its suicidal.

OK, so we get to see the return in climate fix for each billion in taxes, RIGHT?

Pay more in taxes to the government so government scientists can pretend to control the weather. The hottest tax scam around.

Here are some steps for preventing climate change.

1) Eliminate all Newspapers. Trees scrub Co2 and produce oxygen. Newspapers are bad for the planet.

2) Reduce corporate taxes by 75% and give energy companies and others who want to go green incentives. In the interim, give energy companies the green light to produce domestic energy using all available technologies with the goal of eliminating 25-50% of their carbon footprint.

3) Stop buying petroleum from OPEC. Their refineries produce too much Co2. They should either change to cleaner technologies or close their doors.

4) Form a council for a cleaner earth and put energy executives and members of the Sierra Club on it. Let them work together instead of fighting each other. Collaboration works better than confrontation.

Finally, in a one week global debate to take place each night on National TV, in primetime, climate change scientists will debate our earths climate, providing proof for their positions. Let the world see for themselves what is going on. This will include who is funding their research efforts.

These communists can confiscate every single penny on the planet and the climate will still be the same. NORMAL.

For the life of me I cannot possibly understand why anyone in Great Britain would be concerned about Global Warming.

The UK is also talking about raising the taxes on alcohol as a health measure to discourage binge drinking. The bottom line is that government will tax anything to get revenue and use any pretext.

They can’t afford it. Yet, it doesn’t matter.

The same will hold true when cap-and-trade legislation is enacted in the U.S. We will not be able to afford it and, like passage of the bailout bill, it won’t matter at all what we think.

Welcome to the last days of the Roman Empire.

Many decades ago, when a high school student, the junk science fear was of the coming ice age due to global cooling. Now the junk science is global warming.

And of course no matter what the global blah blah blah, higher taxes are urgently needed to save Governmen...er, I mean, the Planet.

p.s. Another classic excuse to forever raise taxes (even the idiocy of tax hikes in economic downturns) was that taxes must be raised to balance the budget.

As a youth, that was a beaten2death excuse that the rubes, er the voters, never figured out (that and which shell the carnie booth guy had put the pea under).

But the old “raise taxes to reduce the deficit” excuse hasn’t been used since...well, since the Obama Administration.

Thats got more going for it than green energy taxes. Binge drinking is becoming a very serious problem here.

I don’t believe in the nanny state or using tax policy to change social or personal behavior. What’s next? Chocolate?

All taxation affects social and/or personal behaviour to some extent. Besides, whats the alternative? Abolishing alcohol consumption sure isnt gonna work

The alternative is to reduce the size of government and its insatiable appetite for revenue. If the majority of the American people want to eliminate alcohol, cigarettes, etc. because they are deemed harmful to one's health. Then abolish it legally.

The truth is that the government could care less about the health and social consequences. They want the revenue from the so-called sin tax. And it is a regressive tax affecting those at the lower end of the economic ladder.

We had a revolution when the Brits decided to tax our tea, among other things. "No taxation without representation" was the battle cry. I want the government to stay out of my life to the maximum extent possible. It infringes on my individual liberty.
