Actor and longtime political activist Ron Silver died this morning, succumbing to a long battle with cancer, friends of the liberal Democrat-turned-GOP stalwart told The Post.
"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him this morning," said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which Silver helped create.
"He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years and his family is making arrangements for a private service."
Friends of Silver first told Post columnist Cindy Adams of the native New Yorker's death.
The steely-eyed, blunt-talking Silver, 62, enjoyed a long career on the stage, TV and in movies, and most recently hosted a public affairs talk show on Sirius satellite radio.

A shame.
Very sad news. May his family be comforted.
Godspeed, sir.
Damn shame....RIP Mr. Silver, god speed!
Yes, his Dershowitz role was probably his best ever. And, like so many others here, didn’t even know he was sick-—which is probably how he wanted it.
Absolutely terrible news. All around good guy. May God’s blessing go to his family and, Mr. Silver, rest in peace.
RIP Mr. Silver
A true Man of God will question why the wait? God will then explain the populace of grace.
He had his entire esophagus removed and his stomach was reshaped as a replacement. He had the surgery after a brutal month of continuous Chemo and Radiation treatments.
He lived for over five years with that situation.
His surgeon was and is a miracle worker. He is the guy that takes the last chance cases.
My sympathies to the Silver Family. I saw close up and personal what Ron and his family had to endure.
I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
I am shocked and deeply saddened. Conservatism has lost a great voice.
Prayers to the family and RIP dear friend. St. Peter lovingly welcomes you...
Rudy Giuliani being mayor of NYC completely changed his political outlook. Ron Silver’s one and overriding concern was the safety of his parents in NYC. When he saw what Rudy was doing with law enforcement in the city, Silver gradually extrapolated what would happen if those policies happened nationwide.
9/11 completed his conversion.
He was a good man and a good actor and I will miss him.
Rest in Peace.
I loved that man even before he came over to our side. He's missed already.
Sincere Condolences to his dear family. RIP, Ron.
Aw, nuts. I was very fond of him, and very grateful for his remarkable star turn at the 2004 Republican Convention. Stunningly good rhetoric. And he was a talented actor as well.
62 is far too young. RIP, Mr. Silver.
I didn’t either... kept very quiet. God rest his soul.
He made a wonderful right turn in his life after 9/11,
one of few Hollywoodites.
Shame. Good actor, not so much on the politics, although he was for Rudy the first couple times around for mayor.
