Obama’s Nominee to Justice Dept. Was a Terrorist’s Lawyer

Tony West was “American Taliban” terrorist John Walker Lindh’s defense lawyer

On March 9, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on one of Barack Obama’s latest nominees. This time it was to assess the suitability of Tony West, Obama’s nominee for the assistant attorney general in charge of the U.S. Justice Department’s Civil Division. Things went “smoothly” according to the San Jose Mercury News, also publishing a nice bio of West.

The Washington Post merely mentioned the hearing was “notable.” Similarly the East Bay Express simply makes mention of the hearing having occurred. Apparently there was nothing of interest in West’s nomination.

Curiously enough, though, not one of these brief reports mention that Tony West was “American Taliban” terrorist John Walker Lindh’s defense lawyer. Another key bit of info left out of these announcements was that Tony West raised $65 million for Obama’s presidential campaign. Money well spent if it gets a cushy government job, I suppose.

In fact, for many of us, it took James Lileks to remind us all that West was Lindh’s lawyer (H/T HotAir.com). It took Lileks because none of the media bothered to make the connection.

As Lileks says, West was a pretty good lawyer. Did well for his client. Made the case as a good defense lawyer should that his client is innocent and, in this case, not a terrorist. Maybe West is a perfectly competent lawyer?

But here is the main point. This appointment of a terrorist’s defense lawyer to the Department of Justice announces that Barack Obama is in favor of a more lenient stance on terrorists.

I can't slam this pick for that reason. If he was a bad lawyer, or was a jackbooted thug, then I'd be more irked at this choice. Everybody, even John Walker Lindh deserves a fair trial. Everybody has the right to counsel.

That doesn't mean he's soft on terrorism. He may be, but not because of his job defending people.

And frankly with the Obama goons in the whitehouse, I'd like to see the justice department take its foot off the gas peddle, since I am concerned they may target people like you and me. "Terrorist" is a buzz word, emotionallly charged.

So this guy defended a terrorist.... so what? That’s what defense lawyers do. Even American terrorists deserve a fair trial.

How much do we want to bet that Mike Spann’s killer is going to be freed from prison by our Justice Department.

The terrorists' lawyers have a habit of sharing intelligence.

And the terrorists are hiding as lawyers.

Americans deserve a fair chance.

Everybody has the right to counsel.

So what would your position be if the guy had been Hitler's lawyer? Or Moussolini, or Stalin, or Pol Pot? Of course, everyone has a right to counsel, but does that counsel deserve to be in government representing the American people. I think not, for the very simple reason that almost all of these defenders of monsters agree with their political philosophy and their political agenda. Otherwise, they would find themselves represented by some Public Defender, not a high profile, politically active America Hater like we have here.

Let him go back to bravely defending America's enemies, we don't need him defending us.

They are all crooks. Let’s face it. They want the demise of the United States. The sad part is that the ones that support and voted for them don’t realize it. Something needs to be done and done fast.

First, "terrorist" is used way too often as a political label these days. Yeah, it fits in John Walker Lindh's case, but that word gets thrown around way too much.

And the terrorists are hiding as lawyers.

When the Obama people accuse you of terrorism for posting on this site, who are you going to call? Probably one of these "terrorists" hiding as lawyers.

Same thing. Same as it was from the Mt Carmel Railroading that went on after government thugs burned it to the ground. Same as it was when innocent Randy Weavel was entrapped after the goons tried to murder him. Luckily he had Gerry Spence. Same if it is one of you demonized and railroaded by the Obama goon squad.

but does that counsel deserve to be in government representing the American people

I don't think it disqualifies him. If there is other stuff on him besides this, than I'll consider opposition. If he made public statements against the 2nd Amendment, or against conservatives, I'd be more apt to oppose.

The other day a 75 year old woman in Saudi was sentenced to 40 lashes for having 2 young men deliver groceries to her house. God bless the USA, give them a fair trial and use a little Islamic punishment on them. After all that is what the anti-American thug was “fighting” for.

If you flipped a coin nineteen times,
and each time heads appeared, and it was the twentieth.

Would YOU bet tails, or heads, after finally realizing that it is a
two headed (socialist-, terrorist-, marxist-supporting) coin?

I think, sadly, that you believe these people to be like you - to share your values and your respect for American Institutions. They do not. They will use those institutions, values, laws, and culture to destroy America. They are far more dangerous than the simpletons that they defend in court. I would much prefer to have the Shoe Bomber or any other of these clueless dolts in government than the men and women the present Administration is bringing to the table.

While true to an extent it is also true that West's arguments made during Walker's trial are tenets that he believes the Justice Department should change to/employ. Second, the media bias once again rears it's ugly head by refusing to point out West's relevant resume "achievements".

Give me a break. Lindh was represented by Morrison & Foerster, a prominent firm mainly representing big companies and rich people. The team was headed by Jim Brosnahan, not West.

West is a former federal prosecutor who went into private practice. Criminal defense lawyers represent mostly guilty criminals. Perry Mason never existed.

The guy is a leftie, but if his nomination is defeated, you think his replacement won't be another leftie? At least he's a good lawyer.
