WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is abandoning one of President George W. Bush's key phrases in the war on terrorism: enemy combatant.
In court filings Friday, the Justice Department said it will no longer use the term to justify holding prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.
Mr. Obama still asserts the military's authority to hold detainees at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. But his Justice Department says that authority comes from Congress and the international laws of war, not from the president's own wartime power as Bush had argued.
The Obama administration's position came in response to a deadline by U.S. District Judge John Bates, who is overseeing lawsuits of detainees challenging their detention. Judge Bates asked the administration to give its definition of whom the U.S. may hold as an "enemy combatant."

They shall henceforth be known as “Midnight BasketBall Players”.
I suggest a term Obama is more familiar with, that his mother’s friends used to call her:
“fellow traveler”
What are we supposed to call enemy combatants now that the “messiah” don’t want us calling them enemy combatants anymore?
What’s his new term? Enemy Messiahs?
I’ll call them “Democrats Plus”.
Hereafter to be designated as “cranky neighbors”
Does anyone else see a rift developing between our military and the illegal President?
I heard this on the radio today. Another stunningly stupid liberal move by Fuhrer Obama. EPIC FAILURE. Way worse than Carter already.
The crucial here is that the Justice Department is now running the GITMO show and DoD is out of it. So, they are all now suspected criminals of one sort or another and inherently guaranteed all rights of US citizens. Now we can welcome them to Main Street USA upon their releases as there is insufficient evidence to convict them beyond a reasonable doubt unless we get some hanging juries.
....replaces it with "My Muslim brothers"
Remember the good old days in WW II? When we cauught an out of uniform “enemy combatant”, we interrogated them in the field and then we shot them.
That was when our Military was allowed to win a war. I wonder how we sunk so far, so fast.
