WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is abandoning one of President George W. Bush's key phrases in the war on terrorism: enemy combatant.
In court filings Friday, the Justice Department said it will no longer use the term to justify holding prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.
Mr. Obama still asserts the military's authority to hold detainees at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. But his Justice Department says that authority comes from Congress and the international laws of war, not from the president's own wartime power as Bush had argued.
The Obama administration's position came in response to a deadline by U.S. District Judge John Bates, who is overseeing lawsuits of detainees challenging their detention. Judge Bates asked the administration to give its definition of whom the U.S. may hold as an "enemy combatant."

Of course they’re not enemy combatants. To the leftists now running this country, they’re “freedom fighters”.
ROFL! That was worth my inadvertant double post!
Whoa - my bad....posted 1 million times already...prolly cuz it’s so stunning.
I wonder if anyone is gonna have the stones to say that their glad this story was posted AGAIN for the eleventh time because they hadn’t seen it befre?
The American people are itching to do jobs their government won't!.
Bears repeating
How about 'Professor' (After Ayers and Dohrn.)
How about 'Comrade Revolutionary'?
In my day, we had words for that: “enemy combatants in the wire”. Actually we didn’t use “enemy combatants”, but the word meant the same thing.
Has Obambi replaced * enemy combatants * with * misunderstood ghetto maggots * ?
I’ve abandoned the term President until this jerk is gone.
Well, we need to be politically correct. The term “enemy combatant” was loaded with implications of people wanting to do violence against America. That term hurt their self-esteem. So, we’ll have to use a new politically correct term to indicate who these people are.
If the president doesn’t have the authority to hold them does the president have the authority to let them go? Shouldn’t it be congress who makes that decision?
“The Obama administration is abandoning one of President George W. Bush’s key phrases in the war on terrorism: enemy combatant.”
I called them dead commies. My father called them dead Nazis. My grandfather called them dead Boche. Nope, couldn’t find any “enemy combatants.” The enemy is the enemy and they”re best viewed dead.
He's removed all enemy combatats from the world.....just by making the term illegal.
Amazing, I expect to see it in every headline of the msm.
" Obama Removes All Enemy Combatants!"
Patriots and infidels hurt worst.
