BONNEVILLE, Ore. A sea lion recently trapped as part of an effort by wildlife managers to protect endangered salmon and steelhead has been euthanized.

The program of trapping and removal of sea lions has started below Bonneville Dam. Last year the program was halted by the enviro wackos after a sea lion was found dead in one of the traps. Cries went out that the animal had been shot by someone (some redneck fisherman no doubt /s). The enviros shut the program down for the year after they shrieked to the courts. Surprise - the sea lion had not been shot after all, it died from other causes. Endangered salmon and steelhead runs continued to have their bellies ripped open by these fish eating machines for the rest of the year.
One tagged sea lion near the dam weighed in at 556 pounds on March 6, 2007. 77 days later he was weighed in at 1,043 pounds (487 pound weight gain). On another note the sea lions also have a fondness for caviar as they love to eat oversize sturgeon near the dam where they gather to spawn.
Hopefully the trapping and removal continues this year and the most problematic sea lions from the area can be eliminated.
Oh, the pinnipedity.
WA Ping
Wildlife management is tricky business, and requires more than emotion and knee-jerk.
I say that as a consumate animal lover.
Say WA? Evergreen State ping

Good!
Now start on the ones at the Ballard Locks in Seattle.
While waiting to go through the locks, within 20 minutes we see at least 20 full sized salmon eaten by those “illegal aliens from California”.
The cuddle factor has dominated this issue from the beginning. It has taken many years, lots of money and court time to establish this removal policy. These fish runs are threatened and endangered, and the California sea lion are more plentiful than ever. To some killing warm blooded furry animal is akin to murdering a human. I wish some of these folks would go up and hug one of these beasts. Myself, I would rather hug a large spring Chinook or steelhead.
Jeez!....It’s about damn time! I watched the seals munch on salmon at the Ballard locks. They would take just one bite out of the fish and it would swim around in circles til it died....
I have no doubt they are funded by ACORN and are receiving stimulus $ from ZerO. /s
Wonder what Sea Lion tastes like?
In a couple of months one only need to spread the word to the residents that live around these Dams that Sea Lion tastes like Kobe Beef... next years Salmon Spawn / Sea Lion problem will be solved.
In the interim we will have fed a hungry child (or two) and probably come up with some really interesting recipes and hunting stories. It’s Win / Win in my book.
TT
Another way to approach the problem is to find a Native American Recipe for Sea Lion that dates back a couple hundred years and spread the word on the Reservations... Last time I checked Tree Huggers can’t stop a Native American on a Reservation from killing and eating any damned thing that they want to.
I have often thought that I need to research my “Roots” more thoroughly and try to regain some of my Freedoms lost in my own Country.

I don’t agree with killing a mammal to save a lowly fish. They should have transported somewhere else. this was inhumane.
I would try sea lion if I was offered it. I am pretty sure the native Americans ate them. If they taste like Kobe Beef we can sent a couple to DC for Zero and his cronies to nosh on, and save money. I am sure he would be all for this budget slashing idea.
Logic would dictate that sea lions and other animals would be managed like any other game animal. Keep populations healthy through managed harvest.
They should have transported somewhere else. this was inhumane.
Some will be put in zoos. Some will not. Salmon, steelhead and sturgeon are not lowly at all. The cuddle factor can not be used to determine how we manage endangered or threatened species. Eliminating the problem animals should be no more controversial than harvesting a deer or elk. The California sea lions here are overpopulated and should be managed. I wish the tribes here in the PNW would request to harvest some of them also.
I believe the moonbats were in court just weeks ago to stop the program again after they promised last year not to file any more court cases. The judge through it out and told them to get lost. This program needs to continue.
“Wonder what Sea Lion tastes like?”
If you cooked one in your home kitchen you would have to demolish the house or just move away - I’ve eaten seal meat with some Alaskan Indian friends (fried and dipped in seal oil) and it has a super strong fishy flavor, very rich. Definitely an acquired taste and hard to find at the grocer.
Somebody should film that and put it on you tube
