WASHINGTON (AFP) – A leading US rights group has called on the US Congress to overhaul the Patriot Act and other national security programs that were passed in the wake of the attacks of September 11, 2001.

"The Patriot Act vastly -- and unconstitutionally -- expanded the government's authority to pry into people's private lives with little or no evidence of wrongdoing," the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said in a 36-page report entitled "Reclaiming Patriotism," which was published Wednesday.

The USA PATRIOT Act -- which stands for the "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism" Act -- was rushed through Congress in 45 days "with virtually no debate" following the attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001, the report said.

Initially intended as temporary measures, many provisions of the act were made permanent in 2006.

The act gives the government "overbroad authority" and infringes on Americans' constitutional right to free speech and association and to the Fourth Amendment right to "be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures," the report said.

Someone needs to tell the boys and girls at the dumbass aCLU that it isn’t the Patriot Act they should be worried about. Their boy, Obama, has already done more damage to the freedoms and liberties of Americans than 500 Patriot Acts could do. Unless however, it isn’t Americans that the morons at the aCLU are worried about. Sometimes I feel as though the aCLU is a branch of Al Qaeda and the Taliban. But that’s just my opinion and observations.

The “article” mentions a “leading U.S. rights group.” I’ve read the dang thing three times and still can’t find the name of the “leading U.S. rights group.” Surely they don’t mean those unAmerican, radical morons at the aCLU. I think the Ass. Press has lost it.
