WASHINGTON The Navy has assigned a heavily armed destroyer to escort the U.S. surveillance ship that got into a high-seas confrontation with Chinese ships last weekend.
A defense official says the Pearl Harbor-based destroyer Chung-Hoon is keeping a close eye on the unarmed sub-hunting ship Impeccable as it continues operations in the South China Sea. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe sensitive ship movements.
The official says the escort ship joined the Impeccable on Wednesday.

I think iceberg.
Most deadly part of icebergs is underwater.
Our opposite numbers over at DU were all over this.
They already posted the background on the tin can’s name...
a Navy Admiral of Hawaiian origin.
Some were even seemingly applauding the “upping of the ante”..guess they didn’t like the Chinese testing O’Bama without a response.
But it has very sophisticated, long range, sonar and other underwater detection gera on it and it tags the new subs at long distance.
I believe it should be a navy vessel and armed...but most importantly, that it shjould be escorted. Now we will.
It’s the name of WWII hero who later became a Rear Admiral. An American from Hawaii of Chinese discent.
This must be a work of fiction. Everyone knows that America in the 30’s and 40’s was too racist for him to have been allowed these accomplishments.
(and thank you Admiral Chung-Hoon).
The article said — “The Navy has assigned a heavily armed destroyer to escort the U.S. surveillance ship that got into a high-seas confrontation with Chinese ships last weekend.”
Ummmm.., some posters, here on Free Republic, are simply not facing up to the fact that even though Obama is not the person that we voted for (and I would never vote for him in any election, either...) — still — he has (in his Administration) done some things that we would expect Bush to do, too.
Therefore, I would advise, that in order to combat Obama in what he may do that we *do not want* to happen (i.e., bad legislation that goes against conservative values) — that people be more careful about “picking on things” about what Obama is doing.
Recognize that some things *may* fit into what a conservative might do, while other things will not fit. If people pick their fights to be the things that are *real* — then they hold more credibility with the public, at large. Then it doesn’t seem to be a “gang fight” — just because a guy’s name is “Obama”.
Pick the fights based on what is being done, and pick them carefully.
In this instance, I have to commend the Administration for providing an armed escort, which indicates that they intend to keep doing what they were doing before and they’re not going to let the Chinese intimidate the U.S. into running out of the area...
It was a good move...
So he was in Hawaii when the one was born
thanks
I’m hoping an ADCAP LA or Virginia, or even a Sea Wolf is in the area.
Thanks great bio
"I'll blow your sorry ass out of the water".
I still wish the Stennis was sailing down that way with er whole group.
The Chinese could up the ante and contest the Chung-hoo...they have the force to do that. They could not contest the Stennis and her group.
IMHO, we should send the Stennis Carrier Strike Group (CSG), which is visiting the ROK right now, down there to ride herd on this. A CSG in the immediate area would up the any so high that the Chinese would be unable to stay in the game.
But, wouldn't that contradict the groveling that SOS Clintoon recently displayed for our Chinese "friends"?
Who goes out and picks up the spent casings?
Click on RADM Chung-Hoon’s picture ... it will take you to the official website for USS CHUNG-HOON (DDG 93)
It locates subs from far away.

I think they did a couple of months ago, and a Chinese sub surfaced right in the middle of the group.
You said — “The Chinese could up the ante and contest the Chung-hoo...they have the force to do that. They could not contest the Stennis and her group.”
Yes, you’re right, but they would have to realize that the U.S. could simply “ante up” and then they’re outgunned. So, what’s being done here is “incremental” in order to not try to “provoke” — but to show that “we mean business”....
The response from the Chinese is going to be their choice, and we’ll see what it is...
